Panacur and different animals...

Right, cannot find any two pieces of advice which match on this, and that includes from my vet so all suggestions welcome...

Horses, dog and cat are wormed regularly obviously. Most of the time the dog and cat get Panacur. I also have two hens, two giant rabbits and a duck who all live together in a big shed/run. I have never wormed them. The dog plays with the duck sometimes (yes, it is a bit wierd round here and yes, he is a very small dog) and the cat can go in the pen if he wants to. As can wild birds. Therefore, is it worth worming them? Have been told both yes and no by various people. Have also been told Panacur cat & dog can be used on the poultry and the rabbits safely, does anyone know if this is true? I know there is a special Panacur rabbit but (apparently) it's the same.

Thoughts please?

Have you tried contacting the makers of Panacur from the box the wormers come in?

Verm X do a wormer for poultry and rabbits, maybe try wormers direct theyre websites usually good for a bit of info. I think panacur is very broad spectrum, the livestock wormer we get for our sheep can also be used on most other animals, cows, horses etc.

I wouldnt use it for different species personally. I know some horse wormers can be fatal to dogs. Better safe than sorry

I would contact Chris Dolby of Abbey Diagnostics, she is great with advice and deals with all these animals - she doesn't sell wormers so impartial advice given.

I wouldn't use my horse wormer on the dog - I tend not to use Panacur on the horses anyway - what I meant was Panacur cat & dog on other small animals...

Why not go into your local stockist and ask their advice? They will be qualified as SQP's. Believe me I know that as I've been doing my upgrade exam today.

I don't sell wormers but run Westgate Labs postal worm counts so must be qualified to give worming advice and I like to be up to date too. Mine is the equine and companion animal section but others cover farm animals too.

We have the NOAH compendium of data sheets for animal medicines, in fact my latest edition for 2008 is here in front of me and you can find Panacur for rabbits clearly listed at a strength suitable for them. Panacur is a prescription only medicine but an SQP can prescribe it (as well as a pharmacist and a vet). You need the correct one for each type of animal as I'm sure you will appreciate.

it is actually illegal for any one to sell you a product which you are going to use outside of it's license. i.e if you were to walk in and tell me you wanted to worm your hens with panacur for dogs, i would be breaking the law to sell you the product, vets can get around this by using the prescrition cascade, sqp's cannot.
back to your question.......i would worm the poultry with flubenvet, this is a recognised poultry wormer availible from ag. merchants, you can buy a powder form, or buy it already included in pellets, you can still eat any eggs but there is a withdrawal period for meat, if you are intending to slaughter for human consumption.
i believe there is a panacur rabbit version out now, so do bunny with that, although i have to say i have never in my life wormed a rabbit!!
cats and dogs can be wormed with either panacur or drontal - i personally prefer drontal! i worm poultry twice a year, a large worm burden will drop your egg production...
DO NOT use the cat and dog wormer on the rabbits or poultry, the strength will be different.....hope this clears up confusion!!
