Pancreatitis- experiences

Just got my old boy back from the vet and he's been diagnosed with pancreatitis following bouts of vomiting and regurgitation. He's now on very strict low fat diet and has been put on Hills ID food.

Has anyone else been through this with their dogs? How well does the diet control the symptoms?
 
Very well depending on the diet, chappie is usually very good (its low fat) and alot cheaper than the hills, but the hills maybe best to stabalise him. Pigs pancreas is also meant to be fab for this condition. (as in to feed to the dog):D
Is he on meds or just special diet?
Did he have any other symptoms? diarrhoea/weight loss? what breed is he?

Vet mentioned chappie, they want to feed the ID food first (would think it would be to stabilise as you mentioned) and then start him on chappie.
He's still on zantac as he's had oesophagitis as a result of the vomiting last week and something else to sooth the oesophagus but can't remember what it is! No other symptoms apart from that or weight loss and his appetite is normal.

My old boy is a patterdale/poss patterdale cross, we're not sure as we found him as a pup :)
 
My Patterdale has had pancreatitis for the past 4 years. He is on Chappie and Royal Canine Gastrointestinal low fat. He has the Chappie meat and the Royal Canine dry biscuits.
It suits him well he doesn't have any symptoms on it.
He is a bit on the lean side but much healthier than he was.
He is nearly 17!! Hope you find what suits yours. :) Got to love a Patterdale :rolleyes: :eek: :D
 
Hmm yes patterdales are a very unique breed! :D

Hadn't looked at any other types of feed and I would like to give him a dry feed as well for a bit of variety so will have a look at the Royal Canin stuff. Luckily he's not fed many treats so he shouldn't miss them too much, he is partial to cheese so won't be impressed at that not being on the menu.

I'm relieved to finally have an answer as to what was making him ill, he was very poorly in April and stayed a few days at the vets but they thought it was something like a gastroenteritis due to the symptoms he had then; think we can now link it to the pancreatitis!
 
I have had pancreatitis since I was 4 years old. If my animal was not managing on the diet and or had lots of pain I would not hesitate to PTS.

I am sorry if some of you find this a bit harsh but it is the most painful disease that you can get, and its not just the pancreas. it affects other organs in the body.

Sherlocksgirls I don't think that's a harsh view, I think that's very realistic especially since you speak from personal experience. Charlie seems back to normal and eating no problem so I'm hoping we have found a way to control it but it's early days and if that's no longer the case at some point in the future, then yes, I would make the decision to PTS. It's not an easy decision but you usually know don't you?

Thanks for sharing, I asked for people's experiences and it's important to me to hear the bad as well as the good
