My beloved Golden Retriever has developed Pancreatitis. My mum and step dad thought we were going to lose him last week.

Does anyone know much about pancreatitis?

I am sorry to hear this and unfortunately my beloved dog died of this, it came on suddenly and he was rushed to Langford but pts 48 hours later

. I have heard since though that if it is diagnosed early it can be maintained. From what I have read about it you should never give your dog fatty foods/left overs - although my dog never had those anyway.

I hope your vet is able save him.

Am sure that you will get lots more replies....common in retreivers and spaniels....

My spaniel lived to eat......anything and everything! this brought on a bout of pancreatitus - likewise, thought I was going to lose him....

Vet was great, supported his panceas and liver as best she could, then 6 months on v low fat Hills diet food, before a lifelong return to low fat foods (Bakers Sensitive and anything with no fat in at all!). Some people suggest staying on Hills for good (it is v expensive!) although my vet said it was OK to be very careful on other more freely available food - no treats at more than 5% fat, ever!

George went on to have a long and happy life and was fine - but I was VERY strict with him! at the end, he died of liver failure. they say that a bad bout of pancreatitus may shorten their lives, but I was very lucky and he was nearly 14 when he died - not bad for an overbred cocker.

There are some good web sites - something called VetInfo (???) - bit american, but get past that, and there are some good snippets of advice etc.

Good luck! if they make it past the first 7 days, things are looking up - just be very very careful what they eat from here on in....

Thanks for your replies.

Buddy has been put on the hills diet and thankfully it is just mild pancreatitis at the mo but age 14 its a bit of a worry. Last week he wouldnt eat, drink or go in the garden-hence the rush trip to vet. He was in the vets for 2 nights being poked and prodded (he has lost 1kg since his last visit 4 months ago and his reflexes in his paws are not what they used to be at all)

I will of course keep you all updated on his health.
