For those of you who read my eariler post about beau and his stiffness,

I talked to my tutor (who was a Small animal vet) about him and he said keep him cage rest, and calm in the house when I am in. Lead walk only, for about 10 mins morning and night. For 2 weeks

I have also bought him some glucosamine and chondroitin and cod liver oil tablets (tesco do a combo tablet of these all in one!)

He is now not as bad as he was eariler this week. However, my biggest problem is he HATES being in a cage for long periods of time, he HATES not being walked off the lead for at least part of it and they are much too short for him. Although he is a fab little man he is obviously getting a little bit hyped up in the house and I want to help him stay sane, but I cant do too much training as obviously making him sit and lie down etc too much as it wont do the hips much good!

I am glad he is improving (makes my heart not break) but I could do with some hints to help him enjoy life still etc but not putting too much pressure on the hips!

So glad to hear it's good news and he is improving!

Perhaps you could do other bits of training that do not involve movement to keep his mind occupied like 'leave it' exercises?

A kong with peanut butter or any treat that is difficult but exciting to chew might keep him occupied for a few hours.

hmmmmm....... good idea.....

shame local leisure centre wont be willing to help! (sucky!)

Leave it training might not be a bad idea hopefully will work when we are let off the lead again with fox poo!

I want to teach him the trick of having a treat on his nose and waiting until I say to get it............ just pretty sure will go through a lot of treats before we get it!

hehe

Having had to do this with Evie (twice) I know what a nightmare it is. But it is worth it if it saves further damage to damaged muscles. Not sure if I would do any swimming until the original lameness has improved but your vet is the best person to advise on that.

Thanks murphysminder I am glad to know its not just me that has got a silly lame orientated collie (stupid boy!)

He is improving thank god, but still not 100% but we are getting there!

Teach him the paw one first, it'll make it easier

If he has to wait for his dinner he'll find it easy. Lie him down and put a treat on his paw and make him wait, then you can teach him the nose one. Otto learnt it after two attemps, so an intelligent collie should have no problems

he can do paw, and corresponding paw to which hand you ask with
