Have seen posts mentioning people panic buying, but isnt it just the time of year for people to get their hay sorted for the winter.I always get what I need in one lump but I am fortunate to have storage facilities. Just wondering how many people do the same and how many buy in small amounts throughout the year.

I buy in small amounts over the year as I simply don't have storage space for more than two large round bales.

I think some people are possibly panic buying and getting in more than they normally would, but there is a shortage in certain areas of the country and prices going up has probably worried a few owners. The fact that there is a fair bit of hay rustling going on shows that it is fast becoming a valuable commodity!

I think I may be panic buying but feel I have no choice. I bought 100 bales last month and need more obviously but lack storage. I called the farmer and asked him to save me another 100 (which previously he had said he could do no problem). He now says I need to take them by the end of the month and he has put the price up by a pound a bale. TBH I don't blame him - he is still a pound cheaper than my local feed store and 1.50 cheaper than another local supplier. However I am now taking delivery of some small bale haylage at the same price as it will be easier to store.
I am genuinely concerned that whilst we will not run out nationally prices will soar. I have been quoted 6.90 a small bale for hay:eek: and £9 for 30Kg bale haylage:eek::eek:. I am not paying anywhere near this but am afraid if I do not buy now I could be forced to pay those prices in a few months. I am unsure how long I could keep my horses at those rates:(:(

I have 300 bales ordered on a yearly basis but only get 50 bales delivered at a time, I'm not panic buying thought its just what I need.

Misst £9 for 30kg bale of haylage? where are you quoted that as we pay about £30!

My friend and I are living out 4 ponies this year between us, we had intended to get some round bales of hay to put in the field but we may have to use haylage - can we do this or would we have to get small haylage bales and put piles out?

ive brought 50 reels at 23 each i have ask local farmer for storage which he can do i see the price now and how short we are , im not going to be silly and pay those prices

I get in 300 bales at this time of year every year and am lucky to be able to store that amount so i've just done the same this year as every other year, although am glad i do get it in bulk as i would worry about price increases as the winter goes on.
