I wormed my son's pony today with Equitape, and despite putting the plastic ring on 350kgs (pony's weight), managed to give him the whole tube by mistake.

Should I be calling the vet? I know it is better to over worm than under, but have actually given him double what he should have....

Any advice please.

Double is fine, don't panic :) Not recommended, and very expensive, but the safety margin is high on those drugs or they would only be available under veterinary supervision.

Watch his feet - if his liver has been overloaded by the drugs he may go footie for a few days, and if he does, treat him as a laminitic till it wears off. It's unlikely though, if he's an otherwise healthy pony.

Hey, This happened with my 2yr old last month. Was so scared.
I just kept an eye on her for signs of colic but she was fine :)
Didn't seem to bother her in the slightest :)
Hope all turns out okay :)

A young friend managed to give an entire tube of Equimax to a mini shet a few years ago. We rang the vet but they weren't very concerned at all, just told us all should be ok (it was) but to look out for any signs of colic etc.

Thanks for your reassurance.

I obviously didn't lock the plastic ring properly so the whole lot just shot in! Will not be doing that again.....

Will keep an eye for any colic symptons and keep fingers crossed.

Don't blame yourself if he colics.

Coilc is a known effect of worming a horse which actually has worms, it won't necessarily mean it was the overdose, it could just be a big tapeworm dying and getting stuck in the wrong place.

I did this with equimax, rang the vet, who said they can safely have about 4 times the rec dose...

My horse was fine :-)

Yep, the worst that can happen is laminitis induced by liver toxicosis but your horse would have to be pretty ill in the first place to get that!!! :)

Dont panic! You only gave 225 over the recomended dose so no even a double dose and as already said, the safety margins regarding dosage are bigger than that - at least four or 5 times the dose, which would mean you giving about 3 tubes before you caused any probems.

As CPtrayes says, Most problems asociated with wormers are due to the reactions in the body that occur when the horse does have a worm burden and not due to the chemicals in the wormer itself... My boy got swollen legs last year after having an ivermectin based wormer after having a confirmed 'high' worm count.
