Hi
Vet was to Mickey for the 4th time since Christmas eve due to a strange lameness on Christmas eve (yep - super Chrissie pressie!) we have done the box rest/walk in hand - box rest/ridden walk for 30 mins - x ray / Lameness work up / and scan last night. Pants result is a tear high up in SL left hind. no core lesion or hole, but you can see on the scan that the 'texture' is not the same as the RH

good news is that vet and me are sure he was an idiot in the field and this happened, so not a chronic problem, and is only in the one leg. Hoping convalesence is not going to be too long
Bad news - shock wave treat x2 (poss 3) over the next weeks starting from tomorrow - walk 30 mins a day (with a small amount of sedation as he is not finding this funny anymore!)

I have made the usual mistake of trawling through the internet and am reading an awful lot of gloomy stories so finding it difficult at the moment to join the vet in being optimistic.... he is saying all being well and as long as he does not do airs above the ground too much in the next 3 weeks that we should be able to start trotting in 3-4 weeks

any one have any success stories to tell on PSD? Any tips on what may make sense to do extra - supplements/magnetic boots/back on track boots ? don't want to be wasting money, but would be interested if anyone had some tips.

my boy had left hind PSD early 2009. With the spa and back on track boots had him cantering inside of 12 weeks. Vet described it as a moderate case (mild/moderate/severe)

I think you have the back on track back pad and I would strongly recommend you keep using that. I was not allowed to collect Bill in anyway shape or form when doing the ridden work so he wasn't working correctly and hence suffered from an SI strain - SI and PSD go hand in hand.

When you have scans done I would recommend you have the other leg scanned also. It very rarely happens in just one leg and in Oct 09 I had my boy checked out again. He was sound just not collecting as much as I would like and the RH was diagnosed.

I was given the go ahead for ridden work after 1 month but thanks to the weather etc have just put everything on hold till the weather improves - he does go on the walker everyday as my vet thinks that box rest is not of benefit in cases of PSD.

Hi TE - the vet scanned the other leg at the same time to be sure that there was no problem there - I think I had 'luck' in that it looks that the injury has occured in the field , so not a chronic case.
I will definately carry on with the back on track pad - currently I am only using it a hour or so prior to and after riding, would you recommend to leave it on over night whilst he is on restricted exercise?
am considering either getting some back on track boots or the bandage underlay - would you recommend that too?

Once the horse is used to the back on track products you can leave them on all the time. Just make sure that every 3 weeks you give the horse a break from the product so that they do not become too acclimatised to it and so stop feeling the benefit.
I use the quick wraps on my boy as they are easy and convenient to put on/off and you can't cause any pressure sores with them. they cost £66 for a pair. For a cheaper alternative you would probably want to look at the pillow wraps and then bandage over the top of them.

mine had PSD in his right hind in 2002 august time. he was back doing dressage in march 2003 and sponsored rides by april. full recovery, never bothered him again.
