helloo. i have just started buying bags of paper bedding and someone suggested that i get some from local offices etc! so i have some coming from dunelm and will be going to homebase 2moro. i work in a college so we have stacks and stacks of paper that half of it doesnt get recycled untill the end of the year when the whole place is cleared out. so getting the paper isnt the problem but i dont fancy spending my evenings shredding paper! but i will do it if i dont find an alternative way/place to do it. any ideas? i would rather get my own paper and do it myself so that way i know there definatly isnt any staples etc in it.

im in the same position:eek:
i can get tonnes of newspapers seeing that i deliver them and collect all the returns;)
the only way i thought of shredding it was by putting bundles of papers thru a straw chopper, the sought you can push along and holds the small bales of straw.

We have an industrial shredder at the hospital - takes loads of sheets at once and cuts quite chunky.

What about your local recycling centre - I bet they'd let you use their shredder if you do some of theirs ;)

Industrial ones are easy you just fling the paper at it :)

I think paper paper is no good. Won't absorb the wet. Has to be shredded newspaper in my experience.

And it's sharp.

Could be wrong but don't think so.

Oh IME it's very absorbent! I use it for my horses and my chickens :)

And it looks pretty!

Most office shredders will shred paper with staples, so i wouldn't want to use anything from that sort of place. I used to use paper a long time ago, but found that as soon as the air was damp or it rained, it went to nothing within a matter of hours, and then it stinks.

this^ the paper i have bought in bales is paper paper, looks and feels just like shavings, i think big flake shavings would be sharper than this paper actually. iv never used it before and im very happy with it. and my horse is very wet and disgusting!

Wonder if one of those shredders that you can hire for wood/trees would do it. You could hire one and have a mass shredding session.

haha! i could spend a whole day shredding! i wonder if mum would notice a whole garage full of paper shreddings!! aha!

do u semi deep litter yours and let it set or chuck it up everyday?

I put a deep bed down (if you throw a fork prongs first it wont hit the floor) and take out the wet every day. I use a poo scoop or rubber gloves for poops. I then throw it all up against the walls to allow the floor to dry. The wet stays in clumps so is dead easy to take out :) I use a new bale every 2-3 days. These aren't the packed bales you buy but loose ones I do myself.

If you leave the wet in then it does tend to turn to mush. I did deep litter last year but you get paper mache forming and it's a b*tch to muck out lol

I nick the shredded paper from the office at work and use it to sprinkle on my Equimats. It's fine! My bedding costs are zero. I just get odd looks when I am making off with the bags...
