Sorry if this seems like a strange question but .......... i am diabetic and i usually wear an sos bracelet. Last one has broken and new will cost £40. I was just wondering wether to have a tattoo on my wrist instead of keep having to buy a bracelet. Would paramedics check my wrists in case of an accident ? where would be best. ?
Other half thinks I am cuckoo but it kind of makes sense to me . What do you think

I'm a T1 diabetic and I wear a Mediband. It's very good, subtle but effective.

I don't like the MedicAlert necklaces and bracelets, I think they're a bit tacky for a younger person like me :o but this band looks good.

They are based in Australia which means one band ends up being like £10 all together but well worth it. They are reversible too so you can hide it if necessary.

I can understand your logic, you will always be a diabetic, and the bracelt could esily become detached. If you go for the tattoo, you need it to be clear and simple because tattoo's tend to blur as they age, although the new inks remain brighter in colour than the old one's.

Both me and OH are diabetic and OH has a big tat on his shoulder that says diabetic (i'll try and find a pic) daft place for it if you ask me but you know what men are like

Now i think about it i dont have anything except an sos on my phone so i should prob look into getting something!

Paramedics/first aiders etc are trained to check the wrist and neck for one of the medicalert type things incase there is medical info. Not sure the shoulder is the best place tbh as you would have to pretty much strip the poor patient to find the info lol!!
Echo what others say about making it clear if you are after a tat, there are alot of different styles of necklance and bracelet so there is a huge number to choose from if you decide against a permanent reminder!

This is OHs tat. Although its not in the best place he went for a twist on the staff symbol thing used in the medic alert tags so decided to have diabetic put on the top lol

am liking those wristbands Cobrastyle might get me one of those

Im an army medic and my best friend is a paramedic. Im also hugely into Tattoos! Your diagnosis will never change so a tattoo always going to be relevant. Yes we check wrists and necks for medicalert tags so it will be seen. Make sure you go to a GOOD artist, make it as clear as you can and as simple as possible. A medical professional is going to be looking in a hurry and you want to get the info across as easily as possible

thanks so much for your replies. I love the tattoo but want one that is a little less conspicuos but perhaps I should be braver. A nurse has said that it would not be advisable because of the complications but I was only thinking of having diabetic written across my wrist so that I can cover it if I want to. I am no spring chuck so dont want to look silly. As others have said the diagnosis isnt going to change and no sign of a cure in my lifetime I think.
Might look at the other bands, OH not keen, he has got several tatts but dont think he likes the idea even tho it will be hidden most of the time

Blimey!! This is quite interesting as years ago signs were put above patients beds DIABETIC and this was to stop the staff giving incorrect diets etc. Political correctness stopped this but it was because if you were obese you had REDUCING DIET OR LOW FAT so perhaps not so funny!! But this is so drastic but I can understand why you would want them to get it right. Wrist of necklace would be the obvious places or on a card in wallet/mobile phone. If someone is out cold they will look for ID and any info on you etc. Always make sure a phone number is available etc

sort of gobsmacked, drastic but can see why you would want tatoo.

OP, in order for people to ID me, I have:

Silicone wristband from Mediband, stating I'm T1 insulin dependant diabetic
Card in my purse
ICE numbers in my phone
BM and diabetic kit in bag
Dextrose tablets in my hiviz waistcoat with a HYPO card
In my old hat I had a note under the band with all my details on

Better to be safe than sorry!
