With winter fast approaching and dark nights, am I the only paranoid horseowner that worries constantly about my horse being out in the wet, wind and cold while I am at work. I know that he has got a rug on and has shelter in his field. But, it makes me sick worrying if he is ok while I am sat at my desk! Just wanted to share that with someone as it is chucking it down outside!

You are not the only one by any means, my friend does not put her horses out in bad weather. I put my horses out at 6.30 am and they come in at 6pm. Whatever the weather. They have the appropriate rugs on, so I don't worry about them. I do worry about how unpleasant it will be for ME when I have to get them in, in the dark because sometimes they can be a bit keen to come home...

I am as bad as u, having worked outdoor with horses and now work ina office I do worry when its heavy rain. He is brought in and nearly dry by the time I finish work but hate waiting for him 2 dry so I can ride.

Hell No! ...lol I am not worried in the slightest. The weather is different for us, I bet most horses don't even use their shelters in the winter, moreso in the summer from the horrid flies etc.

Being cosy in a stable is not most horses ideal situation, as it is for owners. As we are thinking that's how we would like to be, they would much rather be out in their fields no matter if it's raining or not.

The only time my horse comes in early is when it snows as he won't be able to eat. Even then he goes out for a few hours to have a run around and stretch his legs. He'd stay out 24/7 if he had his way but yard rules don't allow it in winter so he tolerates being in overnight. He's bursting at the seams if he's not out by 8am at the latest though and hides if you try to get him in much before 6pm. In the 4 1/2 years I've had him, I've never known him be cold, no matter what the weather.

Nope, She's a horse! It's what they're built for!

Yes i get very worried and even in the summer when it was bad she would come in for the day. I'm now getting worried about clipping, rugging and bringing in. I'm aiming to leave out until 1st nov but need to clip and im just getting wound up about it all!

Nope. He can keep himself toasty from the inside out by scoffing grass, walking around and playing with his fieldmates. Plus he still has an extra, extra few pounds that he could do with shedding after the September flush of grass

Nope - he's a horse not a sugarlump and he gets two made-to-measure coats every year.

He's 3/4 TB so is rugged appropriately but not overburdened and at 22 years of age he's the fittest, soundest and most supple equine on the yard.

Everyone else there tends not to turn out if the weather is even vaguely soggy or cold - they pile on the rugs and their little darlings hardly see the light of day once the clocks change and their animals do seem to suffer from far more injuries and ailments than the norm. Let horses be horses I say!

They may be horses but if they were in the wild they would be able to roam to find shelter . Not everyone's fields have natural or manmade shelter so unless the horse is rugged then it is unfair to expect it to live without shelter as it isn't in its natural environment.

Ditto this...my horses get more turnout than any others on the yard and *touch wood* are sound fit and healthy. They go out at 6.30 and back in again 12-13 hours later...regardless of weather....rugged appropriately (not over-rugged- I hate this

)......its me that ends up wet/miserable and covered in mud in the depths of winer...but thay are happy enough

I have a hairy happening of a native who'd never seen a stable until 6 years ago so while I do think sometimes what rubbish weather to be out in, when I do go check on him he's head down snorking the grass oblivious to the tempest going on around him. He's a product of this land and knows how to cope in it. Only weather I worry about a bit is sheet & fork lightning or very heavy gales in case he gets hit by a bolt from the blue or has a tree land on him!

I worry too. Mine is a 27 year old wimp, with no natural shelter whatsoever. Winter fields are on top of a hill so the rain with the wind behind it can be pretty nasty. She's rugged appropriately and goes out most days - the exception is if it's too icy to safely walk across the yard. I am lucky though - I finish work at 3.30 over the winter, so she comes in fairly early

Used to worry, then I moved and now wonder what the heck I was fussing about.

ps. Only the foals nest in the shelters the others prefer a windbreak.

I would only worry if she had no food or shelter. Mine is still out overnight and will be until the clocks change or the weather gets really bad- more for the state of the field than anything else.
It was pouring with rain when I went to bring her in this morning, trudged all the way to the field, then half way down the field as she wouldn't come to call and then when I finally reached her, she cantered off, the cheeky madam! Most horses really don't mind this weather, its just us that don't like getting wet.

Mine's an arab and I worry. The wind here was horrendous on sat and I was up at 3.30am terrified that her rug would have slipped and she'd be panicking (she was happily munching when I arrived at the yard). Now I'm not too bad. If it's cold and raining and she doesn't have her rug on she's cold, otherwise she's fine. I'm starting to calm down a bit now though, and still prefer her to be out than in as she gets really wound up in her stable.

But I know exactly how you feel. It drives you mad with worry and then when you get there they're fine!

nope mine get chucked out naked in all weathers if its cold, icy or snowy they just get extra hay lol mind you they do look like yetti's. My mare would rather be out anyway otherwise she starts getting mardy and her whole personality changes.

Josie, that mare in my picture is an 18 year old arab, she lives out all year round and copes just fine, no rain to speak of, or mud, it makes a huge difference.
Swings and roundabouts though, I had an arab gelding before that would plant and refuse point blank to even leave his stable if it was rainy.
