I am going to try a parelli hackamore on my boy. A friend has lent me hers. I think it would be best to try it in an arena to start with.

Anyone used one and how did your horse get on with it?

Parelli hackmore = a rope halter

These can be bought for under £10

However, I wouldn't chose to ride in one unless you are really into western riding or a happy hacker. Also brakes pretty much depend on your horses goodwill!

Fab halters though for everyday use.

Interesting coments. My friend is not obsessive about parelli, just finds it suits her and after several conversations offered to lend me the hackamore. Quite accepts we may not like/get on with hackamore.

Have you done any work to get your horse yielding to pressure on a rope halter?

Putting on a rope halter and expecting to have steering & brakes without the relevant training is kinda silly...

However, if I am doing you an injustice then have a go (yes, definately in an arena!) and if you get on well with it buy the non-branded equivalent for yourself at about 1/4 of the price.

P.s. I have ridden in a rope halter and like it for certain things. I use it to give my horse & me a change to think about, test our relationship, and generally have a bit of fun.

I won't hack in it but know people who do successfully. To me, I don't mind if I am not fully in control in the school (although usually am!) but I want to have the bit there as a back up; for safety's sake I need to know that he will stop/turn etc if there is an immediate need to, something I couldn't 100% guarantee in a rope halter.

Naturally, thanks for your comments. I don't think there will be a problem in the arena as I can do a whole dressage test (prelim) whilst holding the reins at the buckle, granted not as accurate as having a contact. He is very easy to turn and change pace without reins.

I want to try the hackamore for the reasons you occasionally use it and out of curiosity.

I have been tempted in the past to ride bridleless, just to see what happens but not found the courage.
