Parelli - Just to rock the boat a bit!

It's just games to me, I don't see the point in the games but a parelli bloke did an excellent job of loading my mare so it can definetly be very good like with any method *used correctly*. But think the main issue is the over pricing/marketing/money making side of it.

I think it can all vary and parts can be a complete con.
When I got my boy I had awful problems to lead him. He would run in front of me, or just rear up. Got to the stage that I couldnt face getting him out of the field. I contacted Kelly Marks local RI and she came out and was fantastic. She went straight in, grabbed him and dealt with rears, dragging and just about everything else. She then passed him to me and instructed me how to control the behaviour and napping. She was with me a good 2 hours. Was expensive but worth every penny. We walk out now on the roads now and is perfect.(although there was no magic - took weeks of hard work)
On other hand lady at my yard has a parelli women, and she is completely wasting her time, dragging everything out and exploiting her. She has a lovely 4 yr old cob with whom she just wants to hack. This women said she should be able to after 2 years!! She was hacking before she met this women, She is being ripped off, but there is no harm to it.
I think the demos can be a bit misleading, but I cannot fault the women I had, and mine will be backed there next summer

For me the majority of it.. MR or PARELLI is just plain old common sense, it's overmarketed, overpriced and they are a bit patronising to say the least!!

I like to think I am openminded and have looked at all of it with interest over the years, I agree with most of you that for extreme cases you may pick up something useful to help a difficult situation but I can't honestly say I would pay any of them, I think they have made enough money out of us english riders. It always makes me laugh when I'm introduced to someone new and they say things like they are 'a bit of a horse whisperer' I think OH NO! not another bloody one!!!

For me its:
- the pseudoscience: dressing up garbage in scientific sounding terms for extra credit
- the marketing: the impression that you can't really do it unless you spend loads of money on the branded rubbish
- the 'impressive' results: the impression that a) one solution cures everything and b) it will do so really quickly
- and the disparaging remarks towards other horse traditions as if no one else has used kind training methods before.

Like other posters have said, most of the "natural" horsemanship marketed is nothing more than common sense.

PP, MR, John Lyons, Stacy Westfall, Clinton Anderson et al seem to all come from ranch backgrounds where they will have had hundreds or thousands of horses through their hands to learn from, with and on. The majority of us will have a handful of horses in our lifetime.

The "clinicians" don't know anything that you can't learn yourself from the horses and watching them. It just seems to be the latest bandwagon that people are jumping on for a quick fix. The trainers have, in the majority, spent years learning, refining their programmes and then profiting from it (!!) however some people are expecting to learn it all from a short clinic or by watching a dvd.

You have to take your hat off to "natural" horsemanship in that it is very well marketed and there was obviously a gap in the market which it has well and truely filled making a tidy sum in the process.

I don't have any problem with PP. I don't know much about it but have never heard rumours or stories of cruelty by L or P and if people want to work their horse on the ground and not ride that's up to them.

I think most of the gripes lie with the people who have been to one clinic or bought the DVDs and 1)don't have a clue what they are doing or more importantly why they are doing and 2) suddenly declare shoeing, worming, bitting, rugging, stabling etc is cruel...

I'm not a fan of MR or Clinton Anderson at all but if you google Stacy Westfall you'll see some amazing stuff on youtube.

I guess you can't blame the top of the tree, so to speak, for everything that filters through. Heck if people wanted to fill my pockets for spouting common sense with a few added extras (bouncy green ball anyone?) I wouldn't be turning them away!!

Long version :

When you've found a smiley you like at Cosgan's ( http://www.cosgan.de/smilie.php?wahl=0&ziel=froehlich ) you click on it and a text in a little box below the smileys goes blue, you then press the Ctrl button and C button at the same time to copy the link, come back here and put the mouse marker where you want the smiley, press the Ctrl button and the V button at the same time to paste the link.

You will now see f.ex. http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/froehlich/e035.gif but with img + [] and /img +[] in the beginning and the end of the text, which makes this turn up in the real reply
e035.gif
.

Clicksmileys ( http://www.clicksmilies.com/index.html ) works the same as Cosgan's.

Bestsmileys ( http://bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htm ) works almost the same as Cosgan, only now when you've found a smiley you like you don't need to click on it, you just mark the text at the left of the smiley you want with your mouse, before doing the same as with the Cosgan smileys, Ctrl + C to copy, back to here, put mouse marker where you want the smiley, Ctrl + V and Voila, the image link is there.

As I understand it, the smileys never leave their internet site, but the image link in the text makes the smiley show up, just like photos are shown by image links on HHO. And if you like the smileys, don't forget to bookmark the site so you can find it again.

And don't worry, I have repressed what I had to go through to find them and make it work

I've always said there is no one way to do anything with horses

THIS is the problem. According to them, their way, in it's totality, is the one and only correct way.
