Parelli - Natural Horsemanship? I think not....

My 5-month old foal has managed to learn "walk on", "stand" and "whoa" in a couple of days of only doing it for less than five minutes in a morning and all without the aid of a whip ( . . sorry . . . CARROT STICK . . . ok - whip!) Does that make me a NH guru???? [/quote

Ah, but do you have to spin it until it's dizzy before it complies

That women looks like she's on day release and been let loose at the local riding school...

What exactly is she trying to achieve?

My 2 year old learnt, back, over, by voice command or a gentle push in about 5 minutes flat...

And as for bonding, wouldn't a carrot and a cuddle be less time consuming that faffing about with a whip and a stupid f&cking dance???

What a load of old crap.

if i tapped bear with one of those sticks he'd 10 bales of poo out of the thing and anyone in the way!! LOL
and buddie my Sec A would drop dead of a heart attack if i hit him with one!! i just ask them to go back or over and they do it!!

I got to 58 seconds and woke up... unlike the horse in the video....

Shadowmonkey.... I think you have the right balance with your horse.. its yours and her way of feeling at ease with each other... so no problems there....

BUT for the other parelli nuts who are on these videos.... WTF???

Very succinctly put, my thoughts entirely!

What were they on? Who presented them? I'm interested as my new mare is Parelli Trained and is very sweet, but she WILL NOT let you ride her unless you play the seven games first- I have learnt that very well beleive me, so I can see that they do work. I am not a natural horsemanship person in that my horses are shod, they are in at night and they have standard tack, but I have learnt the seven games and I honestly beleive they have good use. I wonder who it was who was hosting the film, as they may just have been on some power trip as parelli isnt about confrontation, just the opposite.

Good Lord! Won't let you ride without the seven games! What a bright horse, she has worked out the ultimate nap!

Sorry, I know you did not parelli train her but what is the point of that? Lord it would make warming up before a competition interesting

ooh, aren't we all irate!! lol. i also am not a fan of parelli, i use good 'ole fashioned body language and my voice - no tools, no whips (or bloomin' carrot sticks!) my arm doesn't need an extension it's long enough as it is, (i point with my finger when loose schooling and my horse changes direction) horses don't need gimmicks, i find they are eager and intelligent.. but whatever floats your boat i suppose.

must say in defence tho... many things will be used incorrectly at some time and critised, as far as i know Pat Parelli himself has never been seen to behave in the way you are describing this appaling woman.. (who is she??? as nikki would say) or has he? correct me if i'm wrong - don't disappoint now

just watched the youtube vid, all of it... i think maybe the horse is a little bored with parelli? i think it is cool to do games with your horse, but keep it interesting for the horse, not just you! she was having fun..

Hmmmm... so if you push a horse - it moves away(in this case- eventually anyway), wave a stick at a horse - it moves away, dance around like a crazy woman - it moves away.. horses are flight animals after all!!!

i'm just amased the horse ever returns to her at all, i think i'd keep on walking away...

over-rated, over priced and unfortunately, over here!!!!

american consumerism that should have stayed that side of the pond....

Its Linda Parell isnt it??

I will watch these thing all day, some of it, like everything the principles can be applied to any horse but to be honest it seems a bit of a faff to me...

PMSL at that video, that poor horse was so bored.

[/ QUOTE ]

I too PMSL! I watched the whole thing too......

The horse looked like it would rather die and the women was, clearly, a sandwich short of a picnic.

I know very little about Parelli. And, all I do know, has been through watching Prat Parelli on Horse and Country TV. The last one I watched, irritated me greatly as he insisted on referring to the mare they were "working with" (and I use the term loosely), as a boy!

...or did he refer to it as a "colt"? That is a general term over here for any 2 or 3 year old regardless of gender.

Well, if I remember rightly, the said horse was eleven and used a mixture of "him" "his" "he" "boy"
