I would like to start using Parelli techniques with my 2 horses but cant afford the whole success series. Could buy one at a time starting with horsenality as dont want to miss any important steps but I am equally keen to get going. Does this 1st CD start exercises that you can start using to improve your relationship with the horse or is it all theory?

i'd start by throwing away the CD.................

I see! However someone I know has started using Parelli on her horses and recons it has changed her relationship for the better with them.

I expect it's just the extra time spent on the ground with your horse that improves the 'bond'

Take them in the arena and work them in hand properly- will improve their ridden work and allow you to get to know your horse better.

Ok guys - having read the previous threads on this - dont worry about replying but for the record I dont intend to hit my horse over the head with the carrot stick etc etc etc. I will be using the techniques in addition to the common sense ground work that everyone keeps talking about but that I need a bit of help with. Thanks

Have you looked on Ebay? I have seen people selling there level one packs on there before. Not sure how often they come up for sale though. Worth a look it might be a cheaper option

Terribly tempted to agree with JM7 but would suggest you find someone who it's actually worked for on their horses.
Having watched the demos on tv all it appears to be is common sense wrapped up and packaged as a system..
I have to admit if anyone told me they intended to parelli any of the youngsters I breed I would refuse to sell it to them.. No-one should need gimmicks and "games" to train their horses, they're just very clever at marketing their methods .

As above... by putting the book in the bin and picking one up by someone good... Jenny Lorriston-Clarke for example.
No 'package' no hype just proper horsemanship.

watch it-- and dont say nothing as later this change will become so servere she will sell him

try this at home stuff-- is dangerous
i am not a parelli fan its money for old rope and expensive at that and for what

to end up with a horse that then becomes a git. and for people to become black and blue
and not many reach stage 3 as by then they have wised up to there trianing methods or got hurt, or sold the horse as unhandable becuase hes turned into a git

whats it teach a horse really and people -- to over step the boundary line ---- who suffers most the horse

lets put it this way they do surgest that you can do it on other peoples horses even when you dont have the right to or permisson to - now thats down right off-
not only to touching your horse but then if its injured are they going to pay for it- i think not

if you want to learn the basics of how to train a horse via a book
or cds- then go the proven method which has been done over years and get the help and support
of the bhs--------- british horse society
has books cds clubs, schools, clinics, and listed instructors which are a proven edcuation for you and your horse
the pony club also has plenty of manuals to read
and plenty of things to do

and associate clubs and organisations bsja be, bef, etc
they all have listed accredited trianers
that have competed in there chosen disapline

and most have written good books and cds

and will say - our instructors are qualified

parelli isnt and who in there right minds when teaching a horse and rider rides without a hat

do whats be proven - of silly games will end up with you being hurt-

horsenality just covers the innate characteristics of the defined 'types' - it's all good stuff and essential to know, but you can get this infomration form the Parelli website if you look hard enough The second disk - the 7 games has the basics for you to start getting on with things. I'd suggest getting those two to start with - and watch Horse and Country as they have quite a lot of Parelli on (though not as much as they used to)

I would go and find an instructor and get a hands on lesson.

Its the easiest way to get an intro to what its about, easiest way to learn, and you'll see quickly if its interests you or not.

If you want to read about some stuff, (not parelli) but more horse behaviour handling stuff, try here to give you a taste

PMSL! Sorry but I think Parelli is absolute bullsh*t as well...

Just out of interest. When someone says they want to do something a bit different, why do all those fervent antagonists jump on to slag off even the slightest interest in the idea??

If you think its a load of old tosh, well good for you. If someone else wants to try it, they can do so . they dont need people starting a tirade of nonsense about it.

Fortunately there is sufficient information available for free to give it a go anyway, and if you hate it then dont go there. I would agree that whatever route you take, that getting one to one training is the best option . It wil give you the best value for money.

As for qualifications - I have had numerous riding instructors at BHS schools who were not actually qualified, they are in training, and they are accepted as suitable becaue they know enough about it and have been trained to pass on relevant information. This is common practice and no-one criticisesit because it's 'BHS'. Parelli does just the same.

And another thing (I am now starting to rant but I cant help myself) There is aParelli Horse and rider in the next Paralympic Dressage team - so you can compete at a high level if you so wish.

Decide for yourself.

Sirenna (sorry if spelt wrong)

I disagree with you entirely on principle, but you have such a humorous way of putting thinsgs it makes me laugh.

Keep up the whicisms
