I watched a programme on a new non free sat thing we have, Parelli.... it was awful, hitting this (very handsome) chestnut in the chest constantly and all sorts of crap. No surprise the thing put his ears back each time he was approached.
I do believe in learning horsey talk and how to treat them in a way that is kind but firm, but this nonsense makes me angry.

You won't find many parelli advocates on here - but they do exist in droves elsewhere, so keep an open mind, and bear in mind that other people do natural horsemanship that is a lot different to the parellis, so if you like the core concepts behind the "stuff" but find that the stuff doesn't appear to be synonymous to those concepts, have a look at lots of other people's approaches to NH too

Quite a few people are neither for or against Parelli (I'm one of those). However, if there's one contentious issue on this board, this is it, hence the not-very serious replies. I'm waiting for Shilasdair to log on...

Sorry, I'm feeding the fire a bit, but I felt I had to make it clear I have nothing against people who do parelli, unless they rub suggestively against my horse, like that woman on the Youtube clip did!
 
OK off subject...but why oh why are middle aged women constantly held up as some kind of benchmark for stupidity? Women of ALL ages (and I think there are even some men involved) are ardent Parelli followers! [ QUOTE ]

Just watched the video without sound and having never done any parelli before I can say I have do the same sort of thing with horse's I am starting.

They are surely just demonstration that their horse will stand still no matter what the person next to them is doing, not such a bad trait I would say. The BHS would tell you how dangerous it was to have a horse that was flight as you tried to mount or move round it so I can't really see what's so bad with what they are doing.

I have started many horses and they all stand stock still for farrier, vet, rider, clipping the whole lots...why because someone took the time to desensitise them to people.

I just hear about some of the horse's the people on this forum own and think maybe if it had been started properly you wouldn't have all these bloody problems!

NH - Monty Roberts is common sense and most of us do it without relising i think...

Parelli - rawarding bad behaviour reward spots out on hacks (letting your horse have a much when you've just had a canter through the woods:o) its all a lod of rubbish which will just promost ill manared agressive horses

How I always wanted to be rememberd. lol The thing about natural horsmanship is 90% of it is about common sence, listening to your horse and stuff like, if your horse won't load, teach it to lead propperly first. I never really think of it as a "system" guess its more of an ethos, its pretty rare to find anyone who does things "traditionally" tieing legs up and sacking out.

One of my fav parelli rants on here was when someone said you needed a carrot stick to touch relavent points on your horse yet a dozen of us said that is how we use our schooling whips, no matter what their called, during groundwork! Que paralli lover losing the plot. Hilarious

I think what monty roberts does makes much more sense and I don't think he would be seen dead dancing round a horse.

IMHO, the stuff Monty does is about getting the horse to respect you, whereas Parelli is about getting the horse to disrespect you...
 
But it's not just middle aged women who are Parelli acolytes is it? And why are middle aged women seen as so particularly vulnerable and suggestable to be 'reeled in' - middle aged men have kids that leave home too!
 
......I think it's just a generalisation for when people are ranting about Parelli....I get what they mean as I know people like this....

Tell me you don't know at least one horsey middle aged woman who has bought a foal or yearling to bring on...?
 
I'm by no means saying that Parelli is the correct way to train a horse but that speific video is in no way a demonstration of how idiotic some of the 'games' are. If you are going to try and prove that Parelli is not only silly but also dangerous pick a better video

Well the vids have kept me amused, have to say my fave is Tex tho haha that poor horse just stood there whilst he hangs off it.
The one where they were jumoing around bored me, didnt look like natural horsemanship, just teaching your horse to stand there and not spook. It didnt really get them to do anything, and i've done this with horses difficult to mount too. Can't believe ppl pay for that.

Is it me or do a lot of horses look confused as hell during parelli? I dont agree with all the waving stuff at their heads all the time, that isn't 'horse language' it's just anoying for them so they move away from it!

I like NH but i think there's better ones out there than parelli tbh, i liked it until i watched more of it and then i realised its a load of Cr@P

I'll have some of the jelly beans if theyre going?
 
You know part of why Parelli is so attractive to so many people who come late to riding or pick up again after a break? (Other than the millions dollars spent on promotion, that is?)

Because it's welcoming.

They make their money by not making people feel like idiots because they don't magically know everything there is about horses and sometimes *gasp* they even get confused and scared!!!

So many horse people are heavily invested in making horses seem difficult and complicated and something only "they" can do, even while they keep saying it's all just common sense. (Which implies anyone not born knowing it or who makes a mistake is an idiot and beyond help.) At least Pat is trying to teach these people. Yes, he is absolutely fleecing them - they could learn more useful stuff, more cheaply, elsewhere. But why don't they? Why haven't they been taught all these obvious things already?

Personally, it's not for me. ASPECTS of it are based on sound principles but it's become an ego driven circus and in some ways the opposite of what it set out to be - an exclusive club that equates knowledge of very particular systems with worth. Sounds a bit like a cult.

That said, everyone likes to pick the absolute worst examples they can (there are some baaaaaad "traditional" riders on youtube - is that the fault of the system) and decry anything even half way positive as "common sense" (then why is it not more common?) or stolen. Yup. Horses are horses. No one has invented ANYTHING new about them for a long, long time. Most of these principles have been around forever in some form . . . but does that make anyone who teaches them stupid for not assuming they're obvious?

Yeah, I'm ranting a bit. I just think it's interesting that so many of the same people who are very dismissive of people new to the sport are so horrified he's so popular.
 
Ahem <raises hand tentatively> My ex-racer came from a middle aged lady who was very nice but clearly scared of her. She did Parelli. Watching her try to load her into our box with that carrot stick was a sight to behold (I did it myself in the end and blimey, was she box shy)...let's just say the horse had a few problems which needed ironing out, and I am pretty sure that a combination of Parelli and a nervous owner had caused them. Which is kind of the problem with Parelli - it seems to make things worse instead of better. That's my only first hand experience but I don't like it, and the various videos only reinforce my belief.

For sure the video looks silly - prob why it was posted in the first place. But, I have to say at least "most" of the Parelli people that I know ( and other nh peeps) are working with their horses with good intentions and trying to figure out "why" their horses are doing certain things rather than reaching for a stronger bit, more gadgets, a bigger stick or spurs.

Are they really stupid for doing that? I don't think so.

This post typifies why I dislike 'NH or Parelli' followers. Firstly it has the evangelical aspect - summed up by 'good intentions' which implies that non-NH people have less honourable intentions.
Secondly, it implies that only NH or Parelli people are interesting in studying equine behaviour for use in training - 'trying to figure out "why" their horses are doing certain things'.
And lastly, most irritatingly of all, it jumps to the conclusion that all non-NH or Parelli followers, when training will automatically use violent and unkind methods 'reaching for a stronger bit, more gadgets, a bigger stick or spurs'.
All erroneous, and rather simplistic assumptions.
In short, Araminta, I think your post sucks

Having never heard of Parelli until a couple of months ago I was curious what it was all about and having looked at their website I have to admit to agreeing with the posters who have suggested it's a rip off

As has been said each to their own, I wouldn't dismiss anything out of hand without trying it but I don't think I'll be rushing to follow Parelli anytime soon.
 
Well done. You spotted and commented on each and every one of the points made in my post.

Kettle black and boot foot spring to mind.

A lot of peeps here feel they can just parelli bash as soon as a post comes up.

In my book its called mob rule except the "mob" is only a few of the peeps on this forum who's names come up on every parelli post baying.

If you look at the amount of views to posts you will see that a lot of peeps look and keep quiet I suspect mainly because they know if they post the baying will be directed at them.

Still, you are entitled to your opinions the same as I am entitled to mine.

I am not a Parelli person or follower.

I just think people should be allowed to have their say on a subject on this forum without being shot at and ridiculed.

After all, you got pretty dam mad when you thought thats what I was doing huh?
