I am going to go as far as to say that Parelli is CRUEL and also slightly sick.

I have watched a demo on 'Horse and Country' and I have to I was disgusted with the method.

There was a rider on a horse. Now, if I ride a horse, I can get the horse to go where I want 80% of the time, by just using my leg.

Anyway, the woman was riding the horse and carrying two long sticks (looked like two bloody lunge whips with the tails cut off) and to stear the horse, she was waving these whips in the horses eye.. And at some points, she was hitting the horse up the side of the face..

Sorry but if someone who was a parelli practisioner got on Ted, claiming to beable to solve X Y and Z.. and did that. He would kill them.. Then I would kill them.

It gets better, they were then teaching the horse to back up by whacking it on the shoulders with these stick and loosing rider balence and leaning forwards...

Sorry I had to post this. I feel physically disgusted!
Pro horse language.. pro kind to the horses.. Bollocks.

We have some of 'those' on our yard. & i didnt really have an opinion on it until i saw them with a new horse in the school, lunge lines round its legs trying to get it to lay down ( i dont even knopw what they were trying to achieve!!). the poor horse was stressing & sweating up, it was awful to watch.
Tbh, & im going to sound v.closed minded but i dont see what it does other than break their spirit & also its always there horses that escape from their fields and cause havoc!

A guy I know was in Dubai recently.
He was watching the Parelli lot trying to box a horse, it took 2 hours, their method was with long lines whips etc, and whenever the horse stepped backwards they shook the trailer and banged on the side. When it stepped forward they were silent.
My friend told me this with the face, "what do you think?" and I was silent, but OH who doesnt ride, said, Ok but how the hell do you get the horse out again. PMSL

I do a bit of IH work with Kao, dually halter and lunge line, no sticks, no dancing, just a bit of pressure in the right place

Likewise, I like a lot of what IH trainers say, and find some of their methods very useful but Parelli just makes me titter.

Some time ago I was stewarding at a fun ride, a little bunch of riders showed up, complete with borsals and western saddles, they caught my eye because I used to ride western. Overhearing what they were saying it was clear they were of the Parelli persuasion so we waited with interest to see how they managed the course.

They missed the option jumps, of course, but the funniest thing was that after 10 miles or so one of them came back walking with her horse. I enquired, as you do, whether there had been a fall (accident book at the ready) or the horse had lost a shoe - but no, the rider just wanted 'to work with the horse on the ground' - for the last 2 or 3 miles?
 
So you don't go in for the carrot stick and cowboy boots approach?

Is dressing like 1 of the Village People essential or optional? Every time I see Pat Parelli on HCTV I expect him to break in to YMCA at any moment!

funny you should say that.......we have had parrelli's on the yard and it's alway's their horses that cause the most hassle.....ill mannered, bordering on dangerous....
 
Yep, they also seem to thing they own the yard!! They can get away with riding hatless & also leading there horses out to the field out of the boot of their car ( why they cannot just walk I don't no) & i get told off for riding with the school gate open!! I sometimes feel like i'm the only one seeing the sheer craziness going off!!
 
I've watched two big name IH 'trainers' preparing for a clinic; and before the show, they try out all the horses, and browbeat them into submission, to see which are the most compliant for the evening performance.
Then, at the performance they say ''Mr Guru has never seen this horse before'' and the audience all believe them, despite the horse being worked for hours during the day to make sure it gives the 'right' response.
Not all horses 'speak horse' it would seem.

I've said this once and I'll say it again. PF has perfect manners, but if someone waved a stick in her face she'd b:tch-slap them for being so f*cking uncouth- And who could blame her???
And Antifaz would probably leave hoof-prints all over their backs.
 
What is the logic behind the sticks, anyway? I think I watched the same show, and I was a little...bemused...

What really gets my goat is the claiming of the term "NH", and the implication that the rest of the world is practising UNnatural horsemanship.
 
My sister's horse was "trained" by a very well known Parelli instructer in my area - when it came back the horse nearly killed her - twice.

He was sold on to someone who now has him in a professional training/competition yard, and he is now safely doing hunter trials!

I hate Parelli, it's almost £100 to watch a show, whereas MR is £25 - £30. It's obvious who's just out to make money.
 
I collected a 16 month old from the breeder last week. He had been 'Parellied' from birth and the trainer wanted to give mum and me a demo of what he could do.

As soon as she said the words 'left brain introvert' you could see the shutters come down on mum's face and she had to turn away.

We then stood and watched as she asked the pony to come out of his stable and when he went to oblige the woman waved the stick in his face and shook the rope so he backed off. She did this repeatedly. I just wanted to ask why she didn't let him come out of the stable? She'd put his halter on, opened the door, stood back out of the way, and the pony was calmly stepping out, so surely he was doing what she wanted of him?

After about 10 mins watching her prance around the school with him, she decided to change directions suddenly and put her stick out in front of him very suddenly, whacking him on the chest as she did. "You see I didn't hit him, he CHOSE to walk into my stick" she said.....(Yes NSPCC officer, I didn't hit my kid, he chose to run into my fist)...I ask you. We then had to faff around whilst she went to load him, he willingly stepped onto the ramp on a long rope, she then backed him off etc. It was all very tedious and the pony showed only confusion. If you ask me she deserved him to high tail it out of there, booting her as he departed.

She said she had trained him to be inquisitive and to explore firstly with his nose (fine) and then with his foot (not so fine). So far we've had foot in water bucket, foot in grooming kit, foot in haynet, foot in sheep hurdle, foot in muck skip; really not that helpful!

Only time will tell if he's 'brainwashed' or just accident prone! He'll get the same handling on a daily basis as all of our others have had since birth and I'm sure he'll be wonderful, just like they turned out with good manners and very user friendly, without any continued Parelli influence. And I reckon he'll be a lot less head shy without all the waving sticks in his face. Ho hum.

the PP promo stuff ive seen seems to have stressed horses with tense looking faces and very unhappy looking.
ive not looked into it further as that and the hard sell plus strupid prices made me certain i didnt need to dabble in it.
plus hearing of someone else who had a presiously unridable horse she was carrot sticking, that has since broken her wrist while she was 'leading' it.she askes it if it wants to work that day(by work i mean stuff like wearing ahalter-how tedious!) and if it says no, it gets a feed and goes back to grass.the mind boggles.
MR-ive used join up with my mare and it made her SO much better to lead.really worked.
 
Place I am working at new member of staff proudly told me she is 'Level 4'. God knows what it means, but I am waiting to see. Told OH, who knows my opinions who promptly burst out laughing...we will see....
 
thank goodness to read some sensible comments about parelli. I too think it is a money making rip off. Some of the things they do are positively dangerous in my opinion. Yes, you need to get your horse on your side and to cooperate but you don't need to be a 'whip cracking horse abuser' to do this. As Lucinda Green said years ago 'horses, dogs and children all need a boundary to work within and to know where the edges of that boundary are' . She was absolutely right as the only horses dogs and children I know that are horrid are those who have no boundaries and hence no respect. Interestingly, I hardly ever carry or use a stick with my horses.
 
Depends on practitioner - James Roberts is brill - took my friends unrideable horse and was out hacking within 4 days. Very gentle and relaxed hapopy horse. Dont think that we should generalise that ALL parelli is bad. Its like everything else = good and bad points
