Why is it?
Can anyone tell me without to much detail what parelli training is? there are os many posts on it and really want to know now lol!

Yes there are absolutely tonnes of posts on Parelli; quite obviously people on here are slightly obsessed with it. If you want to know more then perhaps if you run a search in Lounge, you will find all the answers to your questions.

Parelli is natural horsemanship. Supposedly, you develop a bond with your horse and use the three keys-love,language, and leadership to communicate with your horse. Instead of forcing your horse to do something, he is supposed to want to do it for you. I have levels 1 and 2, but have never used it because I don't own my own horse. Visit the Parelli website to find out more. I think they will send you a free DVD about it. The system is a bit controversial in the horse world, so be prepared for many varying opinions on the subject. I personally just use normal horsemanship as I think the Parelli stuff is a little different.

No but I have a pretty good time chuckling at people whose only knowledge of it seems to be incessantly bringing up wands and carrot sticks......

IMO - It's not as good as it's led us all to believe.

I witnessed Neil Pye hit a horse on the head three times, infront of it's distressed owner, just because it wouldn't back up when he shook the rope at it. That's not Natural Horsemanship, now, is it??

IMO it's a load of expensive twaddle.

I think if you do a search here on Parelli you could sit and read for hours!
If you want to really find out don't bother with the demos, or the conference, get along to day 1 of a level 1 beginners clinic.

By the way, I don't understand this. If the owner was distressed when Neil P was handling her horse, why didn't she stop him? Did she speak to him about what he did after?
Don't jump on me, because I'm not a Parelli student. But if anyone plans a DIY approach to the programme, maybe making some gear and trying to piece it together from magazine articles, then please don't come back here in a few weeks saying "Parelli doesn't work". It can be pricey, but if you want to give it a go then the best way is to go to a beginners clinic and at least start out right. Just a thought.

The owner was apprehensive, beforehand, along with the other five in the demonstration, but wasn't distressed until he actually hit her horse. I don't know whether she said anything to him at the time - some of us spectators just got up and walked out. He was due to give another demonstration a fortnight ago at the same yard but hardly anyone wanted him to use their horses.

IMO none of the Parelli teachings can be put into practice by competition riders. i.e. I can't see an event rider competing with just a bit of string around his mount's head, even if he has already spent hours 'playing' with it at home.

IMO it still is expensive brain-washing cl*p-trap.

Yeah, a lot of so-called Parelli students miss the point. It isn't about riding in a rope halter, it is supposed to help you to produce a good riding horse, a horse that is ridden in a bit!
But I don't think Parelli is the best way to go about training a horse, there are other NH practitioners who are much better, and they can give us as much useful help as any other more conventional instructor.
They would help anyone with napping or spooking horses, horses that rush jumps, horses that are heavy in the forhand or in the bit. Just the usual horsey challenges.

(And without banging on about "playing games").
