Lol, i'm a fan of natural horsemanship (in some ways) but not really parelli, i think it's over publicised and yeah they try selling you all sorts of weird gadgets.. surely not being the point of natural horsemanship?
I've been to 2 Monty Roberts demos and loved them both. I tend to mix natural horsemanship with 'normal' horsemanship. I tend to use Monty's 'join-up' method alot! Well i did with Lantern til he jumped out the school and ran away...
But anyway you have to have a good understanding of horses behavouir etc. Look up Monty Roberts though, i would definately reccomend some of his methods
I agree with Hadfos. What works for one person may not work for another so dont be predudice by negative comments. Find yourself somebody who KNOWS what they are doing, give it a try and make your own mind up and it doesn't have to cost you a fortune either!
Personally not a fan - I went to a demonstration once and thought the horses looked - "dead in the eye" as if they had given up. They were obedient but I want my horse to have a bit of sparkle and Parelli horses didn't. It was all very sad to me.
I am also very concerned about anyone who thinks Natural Horsemanship is anything of the kind but that is another story!

Interesting quote. We had an Intelligent horsemanship demo at the weekend and the person said their is nothing natural about what we do with horses.
As with the stick thing, how many horses would encounter a big round pilates ball in the wild!??? My sister's (well-known) Parelli instructor used to throw one at her horse - horse ended up ruined and had to be retrained by a "traditional" breaker, and the horse is now doing hunter trials - believe me, a massive feat for this horse!!
Sure Parrelli works well ....FOR PAT"S F&**IN" BANK ACCOUNT!!!!!!! The only horses I've refused as farrier clients due to behavior have been Parrelli grads . I seldom see these types ride .Ever see Saint Parelli ride ? Sad sight ,legs shoved forward , shoulders slumped ,bum slapping Ol" Neds kidneys . And he and Linda ALWAYS ride the same beasts
I am probably in a minority here in that I have used Parelli methods, still do sometimes, and it has worked for me.
Obviously there is a huge retail part to Parelli but I would suggest doing things like making your own rope halter, using a lunge whip etc instead of carrot stick. I only bought the first pack and that is all I have done.
I have done the games (I think it may have been called 'the seven games'). I found the ones I did useful. I have also had a Monty Roberts associate come out and help me twice (a long time ago) which was also a big help in gaining my horse's respect.
I don't really know why people dislike Parreli so much? Some of the exercises do help, well they have helped me anyway.
I still do some of them occasionally, couple with what I learnt of Monty Robert's methods. I think some people are very strong with their comments about Parreli on here. Have these people tried the methods? It seems that Parelli gets a tougher time on here than the likes of MR? Why is that do you think?
My advice would be either get a MR associate out to help you, or get a Parelli trainer out. Don't do these things by yourself just from the DVD. It can get dangerous IMO if the signals get confused.

Can I just ask....what part does a big stick play in the natural world?? Does the lead female carry one in the herd???
[/ QUOTE ]
I think it's an extension of your hand so that if they were to do anything silly your not about to get injured
[/ QUOTE ]
That still doesn't answer the question.....a person holding up their hand or a big stick is not something many horses would come across in the wild.....I know that MR teaching is very much about how a herd acts and getting the horse to know you are head of the herd......my NF is head of our herd and I don't think she could old her leg up high never mind wave a silly stick!!! Still
at what part a stick plays in the 'natural' horse world!!

I've said before I'm not a Parelli fan - can quite happily live without it - but I do think that some aspects - just like MR - can help people in certain situations.
If you are talking about how horses would react in the wild, then you would also want to include the fact that you should be doing no stables, no rugs, no clipping, no shoes, no hard feed etc etc.
I don't think that you can base your hatred of parelli on waving a stick isn't natural for a horse in the wild. 99% of the stuff we do with our horses being "kind" isn't natural for a horse in the wild.
I never said it was I just asked how they can call waving a stick 'natural'. I would never dream of saying that fencing horses in, stabling them and rugging them is natural!! Although before you judge, mine live out 24/7 and only one of them wears a rug and only in the WINTER as she was a show horse when she was younger!
Didn't mean to cause any offence - you do always seem to be on the parelli bashing - which I do always enjoy -
. I wasn't inferring that you didn't look after your horses well -I am very sure that you do - just an observation really. Everyone has their own views and management systems - if we all thought the same then HHO would be incredibly dull!
But - I do think that occasionally the parelli hate seems to get a bit carried away on here.
I'm not trying to say that I have the most natural way of life for my guys - but I do the best I can with the facilities that I have available as everyone else does.
