Hi,

I know you might already be sick of these university posts but I'd really appreciate the feedback!

I'm currently in the process of planning my final year project. I would like to explore the psycholgical benefits of children having pets/growing up with animals! I would be particularilly interested in the effect that animal ownership has on children with learning/ physical disabilities and across countries/ cultures!

My reason for this is I have whitnessed the positive effects that animal/equine assisted therapy and groups like the RDA, have on children with disabilities, I want to see whether simply owning an animal can also replicate these effects! There is very little research on this area.

Would any parent be interested in filling out a short questionnaire on this topic? Or if you have any suggestions or experiences be willing to share them with me?

The aim is to get this study published but I need to know that there would be people willing to take part or think my idea is feasible before I can submit my proposal to the BPS (British psychological society) and university ethics board.

Thank you for reading!

Thank you! 😊 I obviously am in the early stages of formulating my study and have to receive ethics clearance first (as with all studies), so will probably be a couple of months before i can release a questionnaire, providing i have enough interest. X

I would be happy to help too, I have an 8 year old boy with Cerebral palsy who attends both RDA and has his own pony :)

I would be happy to help, I will also approach a few friends, I have a girl on our yard who is disabled (she is a teenager now though) and does para dressage, and I also have a friend with a disabled young daughter who owns a pony (or 2, possibly 3!)
Will report back if they would be happy to fill in a questionnaire :)

I'd be happy to. I have two boys, 4 and 2. Thankfully both are healthy but having animals is definitely good for them.

Hi, I'd be more than happy to fill in a questionnaire. My daughter is a wheelchair user with learning difficulties who attends RDA

Thats really kind of you, thank you!😊 i really believe that animals make a huge difference to peoples lives, but there is a huge lack of research in the area especially regarding how it benefits children and young adults. I know that i definitely benefited from growing up with a menagerie of animals, my first pony was especially important he taught me so many life lessons! he was also a shoulder to cry on and a source of great happiness. X

I'd be interested how you are going to get a control group...People who have animals see their benefits people who don't , don't but to be a good experiment you'd have to look at both and have measurable end points otherwise it's just anecdotal... and coming to a forum like this it is likely to be very biased...

Blitzandbobs thank you for your post, regarding the control group questions i have two options;
if focussing on the benefits of pet ownership and children with disabilities i would conduct a qualitative study, which would not require me to have a control group of people without pets as you would be reporting the themes that arose from the answers to the questions.

If i am just measuring the relationship between children and pets a qualitative method would be used and the control group (non animal owners) would answer the same questionnaire, questions would be more generalised/less specific so a comparison could be made.

There is however, the possibility of using a mixed methods design which would incorporate both qualitative and quantitative designs this is complex but if done properly would provide the most comprehensive perspective/conclusion .

People taking part in the study would not be solely from the forum as like you say we are all biased towards our animals 😉however, i feel that this forum could provide a fantastic broad sample of people who could provide a good comparison for those who dont have animals.

It is still very early days so if you feel you could add any input or suggestions i would really appreciate it :-) xx
