Does anyone have any experience with the above? I've just bought a horse who is lovely in every other way but she has a parrot mouth (her incisors don't meet) but she can still get hay out of a haynet and she does manage to eat grass. She also has 2 displaced teeth, one on either side of her lower jaw. She eats fairly normally but every now and then she will quid a mouthful and chuck out a load of regurgitated hay. She really struggles to eat carrot and tries to chew it on her front teeth. She shows no discomfort with bitting.
The vet wasn't particularly positive about her long term use as a riding horse when he came out to look initially as he said the teeth could become unstable over the years, but he also said it might be fine, it's a gamble. I'm waiting for an equine dentist to come out and give me a second opinion but any other information / other peoples experiences would be really helpful.

I knew of a horse that had no teeth (due to age, I think) but was still ridden and in good condition too! He couldn't be fed hay but was kept on decent grazing and had two big feeds of soaked pony nuts a day. He seemed to cope fine and was fat, if anything!
P.S. Is she young? One of my mares has an undershot jaw which looks much better now as a 4yo than when she was a 3yo...

My boy had a 5mm overshoot as a foal and it is now negligible. Also how are you looking at it? Sometimes by tilting the head you can make it look worse than it is when the head is in a natural state. My dentist sees my boy every 6 months just to make sure wear is kept even as if you leave it too long the overhangs can wear the opposite teeth too.

I have 6 month dental work for my lad as he has a slight over shot. I never ever give carrots as he struggles with them and worry about choke. Because of structure, they become sharp very quickly and causes ulcers. I know when his 6 month check up is due as he struggles with the hard feed. It gets stuck to the roof of his mouth and he bites the side of his feed bowl to get it out. I always give sloppy feed as well.

My four year old mare has an overshot lower jaw, lots of diastema's and other problems. She quid hay for two years sometimes very badly and couldn't eat carrots - she saw Chris Pearce in March (Vet dentist) and now she doesn't quid and can eat carrots. She needs her teeth doing every three months. You need to find a very good dentist or vet dentist.

She is 7. I know the parrot mouth could become less substantial over time and with correct management, I'm just worried about food packing and periodontal disease :(

Yes This makes sense. Does any one have any suggestions in the Kent area?

Simon Viewig did a great job on my horses mouth. He works from Lingfield veterinary clinic . I simply packed Bob the nota cob in a lorry and took him there.

I had a youngster with displaced teeth. One upper incisor was coming out of his gum forwards, well above the teeth line. He's now 12 and they've sorted themselves out over time. Not perfect, but close enough.

It's nice to hear something positive. My vet had a real downer on it and I was so upset because in every other way she is absolutely perfect. He even went as far as suggesting I sent her back. :(

This is good news, it's Simon I have coming on Friday to give me the second opinion. He has been recommended to me by a few people up the yard and I'm hoping he will be able to offer me a solution so that I can sort out her poor old toothy pegs and she can live a happier life with me. If he also turns round and says it's awful and there's nothing that can be done I will be gutted. He did say that vets can be inexperienced with teeth and can therefore be a bit over the top and doom monger-ish so I'm hoping that's all it is. Fingers crossed...

Let us know how you get on with Simon.

Wow some pretty encouraging threads there, thank you so much for sharing. Fingers crossed for later this afternoon, will keep you updated. We did a jumping clinic last night and she was absolutely perfect, I had such fun on her so I really hope this can all be sorted out. Thanks for your help :)
