Parrot mouth - experience of dental costs?

I've seen a horse I'm thinking of buying, but I noticed when I had a look in his mouth that he has quite a severe overbite.

He's a 4 year old cob and a bit overweight. He was noshing his head off in the field when I went to see him, so it doesn't appear to affect his condition or ability to graze!

I rode him in a French link snaffle and he seemed fine on the bit.

If I do buy him, it would seem like I'll need to have the dentist check his teeth quite frequently but as I haven't owned a horse for about 20 years, I'm not sure whether this will be a crippling cost or not and should put me off buying him.

How much do equine dentists charge for call outs and treatments please, in your experience?

A check every 6 months should be fine, if you get him vetted ask the vets opinion on his mouth but if he looks well it should not affect him, a EDT will be around £50 for routine rasping so not too bad if needed twice a year.

As above^^ A little rasping once or twice a year. I obviously can't speak for all, as they'll no doubt all be different. The one we had had no issues with a severe parrot mouth which didn't cause any problems. As you say he's overweight, so he doesn't have problems getting food down. He may need longer grass in the winter or extra hay/feed to keep condition; but you won't know that until late winter or spring.

By the way she was always ridden with an English style Hackamore
