Hi everyone. My horse is 13 and has a severe parrot mouth. She’s always managed fine with twice yearly rasping but now has started chewing on leadropes and seeming a bit more uncomfortable. Also her incisors are starting to break off leaving the pulp exposed. She has been referred to a dental specialist but I’m wondering if anybody has had to do any treatment for parrot mouth beyond the usual rasp and how it went?

Also if you happen to have bit recommendations, currently been in a french link her whole life but I keep hearing that thinner bits can be more comfortable.

Completely fine, she has a mix of soaked hay and haylage due to asthma. Grazes completely as normal until around this time of year when grass gets too short. When this happens, we bring her in at lunchtime and give extra hay. Luckily it only lasts a few weeks our yard, in fact I have to work hard to keep the weight off her. I’ve had her for five years and other than bringing in early in winter have never had to do anything else.

I would definitely get a bitting specialist out. I have one with a rare jaw deformation that gives him a really bad parrot mouth. the area where the bit would sit is totally messed up in him so he will always be bitless. I event so I would hope to be able to have some kind of bit in just for when he is competing, but dentist had said there could be issues with the bit sitting incorrectly and doing damage to jaw or teeth and causing pain. In your case I would definitely get professional bitting help.
