Parrot mouth??

I've found my perfect horse but the owner has informed me he has a slight parrot mouth, it doesn't effect him in his work or eating. Will he still pass a vetting and are there any major health implications which can stop the from competing? Thanks xxx

Best to speak to your vet before he goes to see the horse, if he will fail it, then what do you do, generally I would say if the horse is in good condition and can eat normally then no problem, but it will reduce the price as you may not sell it so easily.

A slight parrot mouth may not be a problem now but could be as he gets older. The teeth in an older horse tend to portude further forwards, so as his top set are already set further forwards, when the angle of the teeth change with age he may find it very difficult to chew properly. Just something to bear in mind.

My last horse had a slight over-bite. It is not likely to be a fail, it will just be noted on the vet certificate. He said I would need to make sure she had twice yearly dental check-ups. I did look at a horse that had a really bad parrot mouth 0 it was one of the reasons I did not buy it.

The insurance company will probably want to exclude the likelihood of them paying for any dental treatment.
