Sorry for the stupid question but I haven't done this kind of thing before.
If you want to part ex a horse with a dealer whats the usual procedure?
Go try his horses, then ifyou see something you like, then how do they value your horse? Would they then come out and look at her at home? Me take her to them to show how she goes? Or go on her previous results?

i think the dealer would take your part x but it wouldnt be anything near youd get on a private sale and youd get less chipped off cash price.you would be better selling yours privatly and going with cash .alot of people will part x if there horse is naughty and cant get rid of it on a private sale ,so also you must put the new horse throught every situation you can on there yard at time of trial and a good dealer will warrent it manner wise for 30 days, the last thing you want is to part x a good horse and come home with a nutter who can jump 4 foot but wont go out on its own or jumps a hedge when it sees a red car

Depends on the horse. You normally try, go armed with photos of your horse. Some dealers will want to come ride yours first, some won't, some will even want yours vetted. You will get market value for your horse, not the same price as a private sale. Reason being that if your horse turns out to a be a loon then they won't lose out.

Actually some dealers will say they will only do swap upto say 1/2 the value of the new horse so check their terms and conditions before you put yourself through all that.

I did it, got a fab horse which was everything i ever wanted! My old horse got a wonderful home and is being well produced and winning at B.E.

Totally depenss on the dealer, I would only part ex. mine with a reputable competition type dealer - not any old irish dealer, just because im precious! Would rather sell myself though personally and ensure a nice home..

Anyway, some will be happy for you to just turn up with it (with prior warning) and give you a figure or how much they'll take off the horse you want to take home, usually wont be a lot of money though. They will probably still want to make money out of you, so dont expect to get much of the horse you want. It does work, and certainly a good way to get rid of a horse you no longer want, like or have the patience for, if you pick the right dealr!
