Hi all,

This is just me thinking out loud at this stage as I am pretty happy where my horse is currently stabled but there are a few small downsides so I thought there is no harm in seeing what else is out there…… so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a livery yard that fits my ideal criteria:

Must offer Part livery at least 5 days a week (so everything done AM and PM) and possibly at the weekends too but at the very least offer to turn out weekend mornings. (as is usual with part livery all hay/feed./shavings included in price)
Ideally a small quiet yard with large stables (rubber matting is preffered but not essential)
All year turnout possible - paired or individual in small paddocks
Laid back, friendly and down to earth atmophere that puts the horse first and foremost and the horses/stables are kept to a high standard and in a fixed daily routine
Present for farrier/routine vet appointments on my behalf if needed
Owners or staff live on site and do a late night check (top up hay/water if needed)

So basically the standard Part livery criteria I would say?

I don’t need a school or hacking facilities as my girl is retired, just nice stable (mimimum 12 x 12) and paddock facilites. In a truly ideal world I would be able to find someone with a private yard attached to their house who is looking for a companion for their horse/s and is willing to look after my girl on a daily basis.

I have found a few yards that look promising via google in the Chobham area and wondering if anyone had any experiences of them or could recommend somewhere in the area’s I have specified. (I don’t really want to be on a large commercial type yard but would still consider it):

Riverside Liveries Chobam
TLC Equestrian Cobham
Little Owl Stables Chobham

Any feedback on the above 3 yards or suggestions of others to consider would be appreciated. If you prefer you can PM me :)

Thank you!

Hi,

i was reading your post i dont have any experiance with the 3 yards you have looked at but can recommend you one.

www.sendbarnsequestrian.co.uk

its a small livery yard and the part livery starts at 550. it includes everything apart from exercising and tack cleaning 7 days per week. very friendly yard, huge boxes with rubber matting and shavings mucked out daily to a very high standard.

the horses are very well cared for and are turned out all day everyday unless otherwise specified!

anyway, have a look at the website if you are still interested. i keep mine there and its very highly recommended :-)

As you don't want a school etc why not place a "wanted" ad up at some of the tack shops in the area and see what you get? My yard isn't in your area anyway but would, along with the others in the area be charging you for facilities you don't need. Alternatively why not do a search for retirement livery?

I'm lucky and now have a small private yard just big enough for mine and a friend's horses in Windlesham, but my youngster is currently on box rest. Unfortunately it's bad timing as I'm off for a shoulder operation next week so won't be able to muck out. In a mad panic I went to look at Little Owl last week to see if I could move him on to part livery if needed. (Luckily he it was just pus in the foot so he's going back out). I know the manager from a previous livery yard and she is the sort to treat every livery as her own. She has her old retired mare who is very well pampered and loved. Whilst I have no first hand experience when I looked round it was lovely and I can't imagine Sarah running a place badly. Definitely worth a look and I would be putting mine there if they needed to be stabled.

Thanks for the replies and PM's peeps :)

I have a couple of options to think about now.

Elkiebean,

I had a look at the website and Send Barn Equestrian looks really lovely, its a little further than I want to travel in an ideal world but its certainly worth going to have a look, thanks for the recommendation. Do they have vacancies at the moment do you know?

Luci07, your right as I dont need a school or hacking I am paying for those facilities that I wont use but from what I can gather most places that offer retirement livery offer grass livery and I cant seem to find anywhere thats a reasonable commute on a daily basis given that I work full time and I want to visit her most days.

In any case she must be stabled year round and so I assume that part livery is the way to go. But good idea about putting an ad up in local tack shops!. I didnt think of that. Will tootle off to Chobam Rider to put one up and see what happens.

Goof to hear positive feedback about Little Owl stable and the owner, I am planning to go and view the yard when possible :)

Thanks again

Hi, glad you like the look of it :-)

yes there are 4 free boxes available at the moment, they are still in the process of getting the extra fields so there will soon be an option of grass livery.

it is a little further but it all depends on whether you feel it is worth the extra travelling.

But if you are interested it would definatly be worth coming to look around, see if you like it or not :-)
