It is suitable/appropriate to buy things for my horse which I part loan? I would love to spoil him but don’t want to come across as rude or pushy to the owners.
When I part loaned i gradually built up a right collection starting with saddle pads and ending up with 2 saddles. By this point the owner didn't ride and I took on full loan but she never had a problem with me buying pads/boots/rugs etc. Do check first though
Yep, just ask the owner. I used my own grooming kit, but the owner's tack - with the exception of the reins which were downright dangerous, so I used my own.
Check with the owner. I ended up buying a saddle for my share horse, with the owner's approval and fitted by the owner's preferred saddle-fitter, because the owner's wrecked my hips.
I’ve checked with the owner about buying a head collar and she said it’s fine! The main reason is that she doesn’t want money for the loan so I would like to at least treat the horse
My pony's sharer occasionally contributes items, e.g. a lead rope to match her headcollar. I don't see a problem with this, or similar small items, as the management situation is pretty clear! I would suggest clarifying though, if you intend for these items to stay with the horse, or to go with you eventually. For big-ticket items that also intersect with e.g. training philosophy or health, such as saddles, etc., for a part-loan or share, I would expect the owner to be responsible for these, and if the part-loaner/sharer wanted input (into the choice or financially), then a frank conversation would need to take place, and preferably for the decision to be put in writing. A lot of bad blood could be avoided simply by clarifying things at the outset! Sadly, I'm still bad at doing exactly this!
Please ask the owner. It peed me off to have my sharer introduce big hole hay nets for my overweight cob, then she bought a hard feed which I didn’t want him having (he has no need of hard feed!). She wanted to buy him rugs, but honestly, I’m fussy about the type, as he has huge shoulders and needs a certain type. Then she bought the wrong shavings (he has sensitive skin and reacts to new bedding). She has learnt to ask over the years, which I think is fair, given he’s mine, not hers. (Harsh? Not really, when it’s about his welfare)
A loaner/sharer at our yard buys everything...and I mean everything for the horse. There is a tack room colour coordinated with every matchy matchy item known to man, bridles, saddles, rugs in every single weight available plus magnetic, hanging toys, bling headcollars...you name it. She loves the horse and the owners can see it. Its a bit like velvet handcuffs though as if loaner/sharer moves on what is the likelihood stuff will fit the next horse???
