Part Loaner - what am I responsible for?

Hi there,

I have been part loaning a horse (4 days/week) for 4 months now and I am very happy with the arrangement. Currently I pay weekly for stable rent and half for shoeing. I have my own BHS insurance and the owner pays for the horses insurance.

The horse originally was for sale but I have loaned it instead. Recently I have offered to pay more towards the upkeep to prevent the owner having to sell the horse for financial reasons.

I previously owned my own TB so I know the costs involved and I am happy to split the costs equally (insurance, dentist, physio, vacs, worming, food etc) however should I be responsible for emergency vets bills or vets bills not covered by the insurance?

I personally don't feel that as a part loaner I should take responsibility for these potentially enormous fees as I am not the owner. I am planning to write up a contact with the owner but I would like other people's views on this please before I do.

Thank you :)

In your shoes I would make sure your contract stipulates you are not responsible for any veterinary bills.

I have a part loaner and would never expect or ask her to pay anything towards vet bills. Not her responsibility. The owner of the horse is already getting a very good deal if you are happy to pay towards dentist, physio and insurance.
My part loaner gives a monthly contribution that goes towards his livery/feed/shoes, and I think that is the norm, but if you are happy to pay for others extras like dentist then that's up to you. If you are contributing so much towards it, why not just have it on full loan?

Hi, thank you for your reply. I don't have the time for full loan so 4 days a week suits me fine. I really the horse and we are getting along well. Starting to compete soon and I want to ensure as much as I can that she won't be sold. Although I understand that whatever I do can't stop her from ever being sold I want to be fair to the owner financiall but also protect my own interests by drawing up a contract.
