Part loaning advice?

I am going to visit a horse tomorrow who I am interested in part loaning. I've never owned or part loaned a horse before so was wondering if people have any advice about questions or things I should do when I meet this horse and their owner before I agree to anything? Any advice is welcome!!!

I'm part loaning at the moment and the things I checked on were:

Costs for everything and a signed agreement on who pays what eg shoeing, livery, insurance, vets bills, vaccinations...

When you get to ride, what flexibility there is and what you get to do with the horse eg just hacking, or jumping/competing....

How long is it for and what notice period is there for either party...

Do you have a similar approach to the owner - probably not going to work if one of you is a speed freak and the other just wants to potter gently = one confused horse!

Then I would be asking about the yard and hacking if you don't already know it - where to ride, company if you want it etc.

Hope that gets you off to a start - I'm sure there will be some other suggestions. Good luck

Also from my experience, a "friend" of mine got a sharer for her horse and she expected far too much from the sharer, she expected help with her other horse as well! so she didn't have to go up every day! She expected someone to do all of her poo picking on the days that they rode! so check to see exactly what they expect of you over and above the money side of things!

this "friend" would also txt the sharer at the last minute and say she'd couldnt feed that night and would ask the sharer to go and do it! so make sure you are set in your days! don't let the owner take advantage! I'm sure they won't all be as bad as this "friend" but just be warned!
 
I part loan a horse down my yard - where I also keep my own horse.

I don't pay but I do buy him lots of gifts! We don't have a contract either. I think if I had on full loan then above would be needed.

We have set days - I don't go in the morning, I pay for my own to be done so I now also pay for my part loan on my days. So when you discuss days make sure it's clear if you do am and pm.

You just need good communication IMO.
 
I'd also ask about yard rules to make sure it suits if the horse seems suitable.
And what's expected of you job wise, which days & duties etc.
Also same as viewing to buy, watch the owner ride first. If you want to have lessons on it worth checking how that would work with owner.
 
I would also suggest a trial couple of weeks - just to see if both parties are happy.
I know I'm very particular about how I do my horse.
