Has anyone any experience of this please, my collie has this and is on total rest with just a v short 5/10 min slow walk at the moment. Im thinking of takng him to hydrotherapy.
About 3 weeks so far, she is still no weight bearing, but she is a beast of a dog, not weightly but solid and very well built, im not sure rest will do her, i def think she will need an op, so for now, nothing but strict rest and metacam.
The boy in my avatar had this. Because he was very lively and very lame, he had the tibia plateau levelling op. The sod of it is that the second one usually tends to go, too, which it did on him. The good thing about this op is that the dog can return to a perfectly normal life afterwards.
Hi, it's looking as though my lab has a partial tear and I will know more tomorrow but seeing the posts about complete rest wondered how Sags_Deer and Cayla' dogs had responded to the rest and whether either or both have since had surgery (apologies if you have posted the outcome already, I am using search function and found this fairly recent thread). I am reading as much as I can before exploring options with the vet but am very worried about him.
Mine was on complete rest but it did not help. Unless your vet is an orthopaedic specialist, ask for a referral to one. Mine offered to repair Jake's cruciate with wire.
Rest is all very well, but ultimately for the dog to have any quality of life, it's my opinion that intervention eg an operation is required. I could not have lead walked my dog forever more, it would have killed him and me.
Hi ya, mine has been on complete rest for a good 4 months, he has just been having hydrotherapy and is pretty sound know. Ive started taking him on short 20 min lead walks only incl up hills to build up muscle. Im keeping him on lead walks for the next 2 months until his fitness is up and only then will i let him off the lead to run but only for a few mins at a time.
He has had no operation.
I also do a lot of massage on him as well.
I think if you are really patient and v strict you can help it heal yourself.
PM if you want to ask anything.
Its been a long time with mine but worth it.
Surgery for my girl, jointly my decision because the vet I wanted to operate was leaving my work, so she was operated on, and she was in incredible pain after but she had a full arthrodesis as it was riddled with artheritis as well as the cruciate tear, so big op, she is now pretty sound 3 weeks on....she was weight bearing a week later.
She is to big of a dog to wait and see and it was hindering her quality of life IMO as she could not go for walks and was stuck in the garden, this way its done, she will rest then back to normal.
My 65lb hound/lab/something mix has had TPLO repair on both back legs. The first one we tried resting for 8-10 weeks and it didn't work for him and showed no signs of improving so we went ahead with the op. The second one was a bit of a worse tear and he had the op as soon as the vet we wanted to do it could do it which was 3 weeks after the tear. His recovery from the second op has been a hundred times easier for him and I think part of that might have been because we didn't wait although I know that it could be down to many other things too. He's now 8 months post-op on the second leg and back to his normal bouncy, running, jumping, swimming, and critter chasing fool of a self and has been for a couple of months. It took much longer the first time.
Thanks for your reponses and updates. After much reading last night I went armed with a less lame dog and lots of info to the vet. Pleased to say though that he thinks the joint is stable and has given anti inflammatories for five days, lead exercise and be careful with him until fully fit. Of course if he shows any sign of deterioration I've to take him back but much improved today on yesterday's 3 legs. Don't know how he injured the stifle but fingers firmly crossed that it was 'only' a knock and the ligament is sound. Phew!
