My mare was diagnosed with this last Sept after endoscopy (megaoesophagus) she has the swallow reflex with no probs but there is a small area between that and her stomach that appears paralysed as there was no reaction to the scope and one or two small ulcers that had formed apparently due to some food deposits sitting in that area for a little longer than normal. It was thought that hay/haylage would be a problem for her but it hasn't been and she has two very sloppy feeds per day and now grazes with no probs. Is it possible that the nerves that had stopped working in this area could now have recovered and working again - the vet was not hopeful that this would happen as he has only seen one other horse with a similar condition but he also said it wasnt impossible. Has anyone had a horse with this condition and if so what was the outcome - any advice much appreciated. It may be useful to note that she has had no chokes at all since Oct

Hi C - so sorry - absolutely no experience of this although it does sound serious. I just didn't want you to think that no-one was reading your posts or that no-one wanted to help. It's probably just because no-one has had any experience. I do hope you can find some info - anything on Google? Or you could try e-mailing Liverpool Uni. Is it just your local vet or has your girl been referred to a specialist centre? If not, that might be an idea to get a better understanding. Maybe whatever your experiences turn out to be, you could put something on the forum so everyone could learn from it? Wishing you and your girl all the best and lets hope that she's managed to beat the odds and is on the mend. xxx
