Hello, I am soon going to be undertaking research at Harper Adams University into the prevalence of intestinal parasites in horses with PPID/cushings and I am looking for willing participants. This is just a 'feeler' at the moment to test the water to see how many people would like to take part. The requirements for the study are: a) your horse must have been diagnosed with PPID/Cushings by a vet b) the horse must not have been wormed for at least 3 months. All I will need from you is a dung sample (all equipment will be supplied to you). Simple! If you think you might be interested, post below or PM me. Thank you! Eloise Collins

Hi Ella I can participate in this for you ...if it happens soon ish!! My lad is due for worming in the next 3 weeks! ( he only gets wormed x2 a year). He was diagnosed PPID in June, borderline but has been on Prascend since the 1st june...if this is any help, let me know :)

I can - and I am only a stones throw from Harper Adams. I only worm in the New Year, have FECs in between times, and oddly, my cushingoid mare was the only resident to show any eggs at all in the sample - the others were totally clear and have been for some time. There is a lady who works at Reaseheath who does on site FECs - she may useful to you, I can give you contact details if you want them.

My mare has cushings and has been on pracend for 2 1/2 years. She is over due worming and I have her wormer lying here ready to use but if she is any good to u I can delay her having it for a short while.

I'd be happy to take part (well, my horse!) also you may like to post on the Facebook group 'equine metabolic syndrome, PPID and laminitis uk' as lots and lots of Cushing owners on there too x

Wow, thank you everyone for your responses! I will message you all individually. Regarding medication, it doesn't matter if they are on prascend or something similar. It would also be very helpful if any of you have another healthy horse on the same yard, if you could get a dung sample from them too for comparison. Thanks again and I will be in touch.

Hmmm interesting. Its too late for me now, but the summer before my old girl was PTS, a worm count showed her to have a higher egg count than any of the others (she looked perfectly healthy and not at all wormy). She was diagnosed with low grade Cushings the previous winter. I was always fanatical about poo-picking etc not least because I could only worm her with Strongid-P (due to another long-standing condition) so knew she was potentially at higher risk of worms and at the time I put the higher count down to that. Good luck with your study!

Hi i would do it,i have a pony with cushings, due to be wormed and hasnt been since earlier in the year as we do worm counts etc,let me know if you still need participants...would be glad to help...

I'd be up for this but only if it happens soon, as I will be worming for tapeworm in the next few weeks. Horse has been on Prascend since December last year.

I would be willing to send you a sample. I have a pony with cushings, and several 'healthy' ones for comparison. As with a few of the others, she will be due to be wormed shortly for tapeworm.

have just sent off for a FEC so could give you the results of his and the other 3 that don't have cushings? can let you have the results from the last test as well if that helps?

my horse was diagnosed a few weeks ago but been border line for a while. started prascend this week and struggled with high worms counts for a while now. i can help. we have been 3 months clear of worming and due for a count soon. happy to participate if you like x

Another one with a cushings pony who is due to be wormed soon - has worming history for several years prior. Can also provide sample from a horse without cushings, although not mine!
