How slow do you expect people to pass you while riding?

If I'm driving, I go very wide and at probably about 20 mph, obviously slower if I can't go wide.

When riding, I don't mind people going past me a bit quicker (if in a car), but it really makes me mad if they skim right past the side of me - very dangerous! Then again some people stop and hang around behind for ages which is a bit annoying - just come past!!

If people are in lorries/tractors/have rattling trailers - it really pisses me off if they don't slow down - Soooooo dangerous!

But what speed is slow down??

I'm happy with people going past at 20 to be honest. I know what you mean some people take ages to pass as well. Or they think they will be really helpful and turn off their engine, only to start it when your a cm past the car.

If on a two lane road, I will pass as wide as I can, going right over to the other side of the road and go about 15-20mph.
If on a narrow lane, I will sit back from the horse till they can pull in to a gateway (if I'm following them) and stick to the speed I was following them at till I think it is ok to speed up.
If the horse is coming towards me on a narrow lane I will reverse out of there way. It's easier for me to reverse then the horse turn around.

I ride in quite narrow but heavily used lanes and think that 10mph is fast enough to pass - the traffic can't actually go that wide anyway.

I also find some people take a long time to pass - some wait until they're waved on, and others approaching the horse will stop with their engines running - which makes the horse suspicious that the car may actually be about to open it's mouth and eat her!

For us it all depends on the road. Daisy actually freaks out if you go past too slowly because she assumes that there must be something to look at. Equally, she isn't too bad with lorries now but if we pass them on a wide road and she is on the verge then I'd rather they went past at 60mph (as they tend to do) because before she has a chance to panic they've gone past.

For us wide is far more important than slow. As long as she is given plenty of space she doesn't mind about the rest of it

Yes I think wide is more important than slow.

Some drivers are mad though, I was trotting along a strait, 2 lane bit of road the other day, this guy could have just driven strait past me put he beeped his horn at me!!!?? Are we not allowed to trot?? Nobber!

I agree that wide is more important than slow, so long as they're not haring past. It is annoying when people creep past really slowly but I always smile and say thanks, at least they are being thoughtful.

isnt it funny tho that the people that wear that message are normally 'large' themselves and the horses rather fat! i alays think of it sayin, ' wide and slow!

What a stupid thing to say iluvhunting

The recommended speed for passing horses is 15-20mph.

(The Highway Code used to state max 15mph, but not sure if it has changed or not)

thanks iluvhunting! i wear one that says pass wide and slow and i'm not hugely fat and i ride a skinny TB (i'm gettin so sick about all the comments about people size give it a rest!!)

yes i believe bein wide is most important people drive way to close near enough to kick the car

i always thank people even if the are goin super slow there just bein kind and then the people who zoom past don't get a smile as punishment lol!!!

I have a tabard that says ' Please Pass Wide and Slow' but somtimes it seems to have the exact same effect as Harry Potters invisibility cloak?!

If I hear someone approaching too fast I find turning and fixing them with my best Paddington stare, whilst pointing my stick at them to be very effective. They usually know they're going too fast and so are shamed into slowing down!!

iluvhunting - what a 'nice' person you are!

I usually go past at about 15mph, but will wait if necessary so that I can give horse and rider a bit of room. I prefer to be passed wide and reasonably fast rather than close and slow

Most people are very considerate but there's always the odd idiot.
