Passier Saddles

I currently use some 45yr old stirrup leathers, girth and bridle which are only just showing a little bit of age, also have my mums old saddle also of the same age, although i dont use it as it dosnt fit mine it looks very well made and obviously has stood the test of time as not huge amounts of wear from years of showjumping in it.

IMO they are very well made and will last a lifetime if they're looked after, bar obviously flocking etc.

Sounds hopeful then, saddle isn't brand new but likewise not 45 years old either! It's a bit of a bargain so hoping it's an ok fit and saddler can reflock it to a perfect fit, fingers crossed!

Lovely lovely saddles! I had a Passier Grand Gilbert a few years ago, and it's the second nicest saddle I've ever had! First choice is my Inch's Xenophon, but only because it suits my height/shape best. The Passier was a much better looking saddle, and very comfortable.

I would definitely go for it if its a bargain if its not to old a model im sure they'll be able to modify it. If i wasn't a student i would definitely get one as they are far better quality than any of the brands like barnsby and gfs which i think have lost the quality in their tack .

Always interesting talking about saddle brands. If you think it might fit and it seems the right price then do go for it, they are nice saddles. Tend to have narrowish twists and mainly not-too-deep seats.

But....leather has changed over the years. Since foot & mouth English leather is not the same - the animals are 30 months when slaughtered so the leather is much younger. Recent saddles of a given brand may not be quite the same quality as older ones.

Also, Passiers new are £2-3k on the whole, it is simply not fair to compare them to the other brands quoted which cost substantially less.

sbloom, thank you. I'm 'hoping' it might fit, the picture of it in the advert just shows the side view, it's the right length and the D-D measurement might be ok, but they're so different between brands who knows!

If I think it fits I'll get the saddler out, that way they can either reflock to fit properly or as (if you say) it's a decent saddle brand, they might be willing to trade it towards the cost of something that does fit!

It's to go on my New Forest, she's not the widest but anyway, it's worth a punt I think!

I fit NFs a lot and I'm be surprised if it could be fitted to one, they need really flat trees usually. You might be lucky though and of course the models do vary, but not seen that sort of brand fitted to one successfully yet!

Bugger! BUT this one is so cheap I think I can make a profit on it.

Any thoughts on what does fit NF's? Aiming to get something 2nd hand and then get saddler out to fit it as none of them seem to do a lot 2nd hand these days.

Very few brands make trees flat enough for natives which is why the company I work for specialises in them! We hardly ever get used saddles, especially dressage, but you can find them - if you send me photos I could advise what might work.

You may find it easier to locate a good WH saddle as even fewer companies make dressage saddles for very flat horses - everyone wants a very deep seat which simply isn't compatible with very flat backs. Although I don't fit them, and fit ours for a reason :D, you might find companies like Farrington and Silhouette make a suitable saddle. Look for a decent flat spot in the deepest part of the seat and a pommel and cantle that's not too high, for a regular narrowish ribcaged NF don't go for a really wide headed/twist tree, they usually need something neater. You'll also need flat flocked panels (foam panels usually sweep up too much, not flat enough) and ideally a choice of girth straps for stability (VERY rare in dressage saddles but more likely with WH).

NFs can be pertty tricky to fit, most regular brands just don't come close.

I've managed to locate an Ideal Working Hunter saddle in a 16.5 inch, from what the advert states it is probably too wide at the moment but she has checked with their saddler and it has an adjustable tree. I'm hoping that it can be adjusted to fit her, a lot of googling and the Ideal WH seems to be quite popular with NF's.

(and I though saddle fitting would be easy once I'd sold the thoroughbred! :D)

Hoping the Ideal is a goer, it's 'just' in budget, the local saddlers I contacted have told me that a 5ft8 adult on a 13.2hh pony is probably going to mean a custom made saddle, something I really can't afford at the moment!

Thank you for your advice, I didn't realise fitting a native was so tricky!
