I need to know if a horse comes without a passport (cant go into reason as too complicated) but if a vet scans said horse and there is a microchip present what details does the vet get from said microchip ie; does it say who the horse is registered with? and which agency its passport is with?
Thanks in advance

The first few digits of the chip will tell either which passport issuer/society or company the horse is registered with so you will need to check with them for any details they have on your horse. I think DEFRA or your vet can give you the codes for each society but stand to be corrected on that.

If the horse was chipped in UK--vet will know from number, put number into search on
www.nedonline.co.uk you will need to register and buy some credit
Passport should come up

If chipped in another country--more difficult--your vet should be able to access info--if not please PM me and with Tracing Equines we will try to help

thanks for that reply Im trying to establish how a vet as filled in a passport form with the horses description and said microchip number number on it and then owner at the time as got a second passport from horse passport agency as surely the vet would have known who the microchip belonged to and now Im left with this mess !!!

I wish it was that simple--the chip number does not relate to the Passport ID number

The different PIO codes are all on Nedonline under data suppliers.

Hope the microchip number brings up the HPA passport then you can request a duplicate.

ok the chip is a weatherbys one I do know this and mare was registered with them as a foal in 2002 in Ireland have done checks there I swapped her with my coloured 4 weeks ago and alls not as it seems I was told the Irish destroyed passport as they didnt want her raced or bred from over here so was given her horse pasport agency one plus a photo copy of original weatherbys passport (no clue why i was given this as this as open full can of worms) so horse agency passport gives date of birth as 2004 so thats wrong ! was only got last year in NW and vet as scanned chip then done passport am trying to understand why did he not know she was already with weatherbys from chip and why the then owner who knew she was registered did this rather than get a duplicate passport there are a few things that have come to light that about this mare since we swapped and now this so Im far from impressed why do ppl have to lie????

Sorry, I was getting them mixed up, I knew something would give you the issuer's identity. :o Good job you're here to sort us out. :).

OP: that does sound like a can of worms but if I was you I would be contacting Weatherbys for a duplicate passport from them (it will cost sadly but it will be worth a heck of a lot more than a HPA one in the future)

Do contact Weatherbys please--they can give you better advice than I can

It may be also worthwhile contacting DEFRA Horse passports as they are trying to update legislation again and need to know about problems--they may send you back to your local Trading STDS who operate horse passport regulations

Email : horse.passports@defra.gsi.gov.uk,
Primary Phone: 020 7 238 6039

According to passport regulations it is illegal for a horse to have 2 passports

well after speaking to HPA this afternoon they said their passport is not valid as the weatherbys one is the initial passport and i need to send it back to them and they will look into how it managed to be issued,,, thats marvelous as realistically I will then have no passport for the mare in my possesion ,,,yes I can apply for a duplicate from weatherby but have to get vet to do another description and then pay for passport ,,,,money again that I should not be paying out,, so I was basically swapped a mare without a valid passport !!! wouldnt mind if Id done it with some dodgey dealer but thats far from the case

I am sure you are right but shouldnt wetherbys have a duplicate copy of the intial vets discription,I have an old one issued in 1988 and there is a drawing although its basic.
If its chipped it should I thought be easy to find the origanal drawing.
I would be using the sale of goods act to get some money out of the dealer to cover the costs.

Weatherby's can be really awkward and if they only want the vet to confirm the description, you're very lucky as they could also ask for DNA. I suspect the horse has a generic passport to save money replacing a lost Weatherby's one as they're comparitively expensive, though probably worth it with a mare
