We're doing our first ever event on Sunday and owner still has his passport.

Can any seasoned eventers tell me how often they get checked?? It's up to date and valid etc but from the rules it looks like you can get in big trouble if you don't present it when asked.

Obviously am gonna do my level best to get it posted up by next day delivery but the guy can be difficult to get hold of and am now having a massive panic!!

I remember only having to present it a handful of times, I think it depends on the venue! Where are you going?

I'd be more worried about being stopped by VOSA and not having the passport??? But maybe I'm a bit anal about things like that

We have had passport checked once this season (BCA) out of 5 events.
I would worry about travelling a horse without a passport more, if you are stopped you are given 3 hours to produce it which could be difficult while on you way to an event.

First off, you do know that just driving the horse around without his passport is breaking the law

So you could in theory be in bigger trouble that just with BE if you go without it, and yes I've been pulled over by the police/DEFRA on my way to a competition and the passports checked.

Having said that, we've all been there and, in my experience at least, a)They are rarely checked and b)If they are, there is a tiny bit of leeway if you explain, plead ignorance/first-timer statue etc and send a copy of the passport to BE the next day. But if it were me I would try my hardest to get hold of it - it's one less worry on a day when you'll have enough to worry about

Best of luck, anyway

I had no idea about the VOSA thing. OMG - I feel so ignorant!! I had no idea about all of this.

I haven't pushed for the passport because the owner is terminally ill and the horse is on permanent loan to me and owner doesn't seem to be able to "let go" of it. But I will have to put my foot down and get p/p asap now.

Event a BE90 and is only 5 mins up the road at Thornton Watlass.

I just don't think I can get hold of it in time as the guy, it appears, is now in Spain having a break between treatments.

VOSA didn't ask to see ours when we stopped but OldGit thinks they saw him rummaging for them and figured that they were on board (which they were.)

Why not ask the owner to scan the relevant pages in and email the scans, you can then print them out and take them along if case the original doesn't arrive in time.

Ah just seen what you put about owner being away, is there anyone else who can email it? Surely you have a vacc card at least if you've got the horse on permanent loan. That's what they check at events.

Was horrified that they weren't asked for at Southwell Racecourse yesterday as the Jockey Club are mega-strict about flu jabs on their racing premises!

Yes, they do get checked, but rarely. It's the flu vaccs that they're most interested in. Could you get a print out of his vet's records as evidence if you can't get the real thing?

If you're only 5 mins away, v unlikely you'll be pulled by vosa/police etc. so don't worry about that.
At the event they might check it, I've had them looked at a couple of times this season. But as already said it is the vaccs. they're interested in. Could you contact the horse's vet and ask for a note to say it is vacc. correctly up to date?

Never been asked in 5 seasons BE or anywhere eg PC/RC

For some reason one season I decided to take the passport with me to get my hat tagged and realised at the secs that I had my mother's horse's passport instead! Sec was v sweet and let me carry on and I emailed a scan of the correct passport that night when I got home
