The issuing body of my mare's passport are refusing to update her details, she was registered at 6 months as piebald, but now at 5yo (yesterday) she is dapple grey. However they are refusing to believe it is her. Her marking's that you can still see, match up and her microchip is correct for the passport. It's got to the point now where I am prepared to get her a new passport with the correct details. can I do this?

Our little rescue pony was very late to grey out and he would have been 'piebald' at 6 months I reckon. He was pretty dark at 18 months when we picked him up, to the point where I was adamant (wrongly, hat eaten) that he was a roan. Now he's white and you can only see the splodges when he's wet.

Yours isn't blue and white (blue and whites are roans with the splodgy gene), she's a piebald who also carries the greying gene - grey and white if you like. Can the vet do you a letter of support? Genetically she is still piebald even if she doesn't look it. So maybe what you need is a note on the passport that she carries the grey gene and has now greyed out. Grey isn't a colour remember - it's something that is done to a colour.

Your horse is still piebald. Technically that is black and white, the black has now greyed out but the markings are still there. She is not a grey horse, the white patches will still be there with pink skin whereas greys have dark skin.

Why is it an issue that she doesn't match in colour? My horses passport says he's chestnut (issued at a few months old) and he's most certainly grey to look at now (aged 19)

His passport is an FEI passport and he's competed internationally with it - and presumably without any problems, he was grey his whole professional career.

If the microchip matches you can prove it's her if you ever came to sell.
