Very sadly a good friend of mine has recently passed away from cancer.

She asked me before her death to help sort out homes for her horses, and have done so. However as she died quicker than expected I never had time to ask for the whereabouts of the horses passports and vacc certs etc.

The older mare is going to one of her neighbours, and will be 'walked' down to her new home, and will be unlikely to travel anywhere, am not too concerned.

However I have a lady due to pick up the younger mare next week but as of yet have no passport. I am going around to her house tomorrow to go through some paper work with her son, but if we can't find the passport, what do we do?

The younger one might have a microchip.
If so you could check with the relevent breed society (assuming she is a pure breed) and see what they can do for you.
If not.....I have no idea!
 
Thanks for your reply - sadly no chips and no known breeding - lovely but 'common and garden' cob types....

Have emailed Horse passport Agency so hopefully they can advise.
 
you can get a duplicate passport.
get vet to scan the microchip and do a silhouette picture.
As you are not their owner you may need some other proof that you are acting for the family.
 
They are not chipped so cannot get a duplicate. The older mare is 27yrs and the younger one 13yrs, so not a 'youngster' other than in comparison to her field mate.

My friend was a responsible owner and would be very suprised if they didn't have passports, just a shame she died before I could establish where they were kept.

I am cited in the will as being responsible for re-homing the horses.

The horses need to be moved asap as there is no one permanently at the property to look after them, and I have no space at mine. I though I had everything sorted until I thought about passports.

Why is life so complicated, especially in such a difficult time...
 
Does her vet remember the passports? Or at least the society they were registered with? Because then you could at least put a call in to see how you can get a duplicate?
 
That's a great idea - know who her vet was so will contact them tomorrow, and if nothing else, will at least be able to give me their vaccination records.

First of all, I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. She sounds responsible as she thought about putting you in charge of the horses so I'm sure that she will have had passports and put them in a sensible place. I reckon you'll find them when you go through her papers with her son.

It's lovely to hear that you have taken this responsibility on and it sounds like you've done a good job at what must be a very difficult time. She's lucky to have had a friend like you!

I'm 25 and reasonably healthy but (after less than a month of horse ownership) I'm already worried about what would happen to my girl if anything happened to me.
