Hi..I'm pretty new to all this, I've loaned horses before but just bought my own and it's looking like I've been lied to alot..(shock!) so basically I got a horse which I believe to be a ISH, the sellers told me they would send the passport away for me as they hasn't registered to them so they would 'kill two birds with one stone' and get it sorted together...? So a couple of weeks later the passport arrives from the horse passport agency with no specified breed or record of dam/sire ect. My mare is microchipped and I've tried contacting other passport companies to see if they have a record of her, so far being unsuccessful :( I know some will say 'well u have a passport what difference does it make' ect ect, but the point is my mare wasn't exactly 'cheap' and I know I should have had things checked properly before purchasing but my naiveness and trusting nature means I didn't...the seller told me she had a passport for the mare but now says she didn't have an original passport and was told by the previous owner that the mare had a ISH passport but only the registered keeper could apply to have one reissued which is why she only applied for a horse passport agency one...my concern is my mare could actually be any breed and I wouldn't know (I'm not that familiar with breeds) I'm told she has a TBxID mam and a TBxID dad but how far true this is I don't know. The horse passport agency want to know the name and details of the seller to as they have broken the law in afew different ways with this sale (selling without passport, applying for a new passport when she is suppose to already have one and also signing my name on the application for new passport without my knowledge.) sooo...I'm not even sure what I'm asking after all that info...does anyone have any advice on how I can find anything out and/or what I should do??? Thanks in advance... :)

You have a passport now so all is okay? She isn't a breed, she's a cross, so I'm not too sure I understand the problem but hope you can get it sorted so that you are happy.

If you like the mare and are happy with her - why do you need a breed passport. I had a pleasure horse society pssport for one of mine that didn't record his breeding even though I had all his breed paperwork from when he was imported. To get a full Dutch passport was ££££s so I opted for the cheap option doesn't effect his breeding or mean he isn't the breed I know he is.
If she's a good mare then what kind of passport she has won't make any difference to her value.

I'm not sure I understand the problem here. ISH is a type of horse rather than a breed anyway and if I'm not mistaken is usually ID x TB.

The only thing that would worry me is that the mare's original passport is missing and whilst passports don't guarantee ownership I would wonder whether the seller was even the legal owner of the horse.

Have you tried contacting the Northern Irish Horse Board and giving them the details that you have. She may be registered with them.

What this demonstrates is how useless the Microchipping system is. There is no central database for microchips so even if a horse is found with a microchip in it one would have to contact all the microchip companies and even then they are not obliged to ensure that they obtain details of the owner and horse that the microchip has been put in.
The whole thing is a total farce.
Microchipping a horse will remain a total waste of time until a central data base is set up and it is compulsory for vets to provide details of the horse they have microchipped and the owners contact details..

The vet would have reviewed the passport, which would have confirmed breeding detais, age etc. at the vetting. Im assuming you're happy with the horse, so the rest is academic.

contact petlog the central database and will be able to tell you which microchip company hold the registered owners details. as for getting the previous owners details your vet should be able to do that for you if they have scanned and have the chip number.
is the horse definatly microchipped?
has your vet scanned for the chip number?

The microchip is by pet trac which have told me was done in Ireland but has never been registered to anyone. My main concern is the fact I've been lied to so much. The seller told me she had sent a passport away to change the ownership to me but now says she didn't have a passport so she applied for one via the horse passport agency. It just makes me worry about what else she has lied about. Does somebody else have a passport for her and if so why? And what can they do with it? I don't know the names of her parents or even that her name is what they say as she doesn't have a long fancy name like most I know. I understand that an ish isn't an actual breed as such and is a cross but it's just that I was told she had a ish passport so i don't understand why they said thay if she didn't. It's all confusing me and if the truths known they probably didn't have a passport for her and because she didn't tell me that from the beginning and kept lying and lying its making me suspicious.

I'm learning alot about how messed up the whole passport/microchip thing is. No wonder so many people don't bother changing them over. One other thing that doesn't make sense to me..the passport I have says it doesn't prove ownership but having the chip registered to me doesn't either so what exactly does?? :-/
