I got my new horse on Friday. Owner gave me his passport with the comment of 'its the most awful passport you will have ever seen' and indeed it is! Basically issued from an organisation called Oakdale Meats NI Ltd (what an awful name). It looks like a 14 year old has put it together in their bedroom!! For transfer of ownership you literally just sign a section on the passport. Plus the vet who carried out new horses vetting dropped it in water (!) so it looks even worse but it is readable! The vaccination section is all up to date and legible.

So i've looked up Oakdale; there a few posts on here years ago with people also saying how unprofessional the passport is, and they are no longer a PIO.

My issue is, I want to register him with BD with a variation of his name and I know that BD needs to see this on his passport but as Oakdale are no longer a PIO I can't change any details with them. Obviously a horse can't have more than one passport so I'm thinking I can't just apply for another passport from a different PIO, or can I? I looked on the CHAPS UK website and they will 'overwrite' a passport but that would mean I still have the original passport!! Any advice please...

could you not just "lose" the passport you were given and apply for a new one elsewhere?

You can't "lose " the passport as a duplicate can only be issued by the origin authority. The chip will be registered with that authority as well. You can't change the PIO, only get it overstamped.

I’m pretty sure you can deny all knowledge of the passport and get a new one. There’s no central records of passports and I’ve had a couple come without which I’m sure had them previously. The only issue with that is that the vaccination records won’t be there, which I don’t know if you need for BD.
Applying for a new passport is pretty simple, but you will need a vet to fill in the section with the microchip number.

If you deny all knowledge of the passport you inevitably implicate the seller in selling without one which is unlawful. I'm not sure how likely that is to translate into the relevant fine - but it does seem a bit rough to accuse someone else of breaking the law just becuase you dont like the passport. You could "loose" it yourself - but the Chip will link back to the origional passport name. You can get a copy passport from another PIO in such circumstances. But it won't change the passport name. If you do obtain an overstamped duplicate from a PIO which then also allows name chnages that might be a possible route - I've not tried it.

Alternatievly you can add a prefix or suffix to the passport name for a £30 fee when you register BD but you must also use the passport name unless there isn't one. This is, I understand, quite strictly enforced. But if that is all the variation you want to do to the name that seems to me far simpler than this elabortae "loose" one, or deny the seller lawfully sold the horse etc.

If you have the old passport and a chip in the horse I would get in touch with the Horse Passport Agency. They were really helpful when I wanted a passport for the companion pony, no questions asked and they do a rush job for a bit extra. The chap there had a nice sense of humour (regarding odd names!). You may have to get another form filled by a vet but the issuer will let you know. Phone or email them.

Thanks for your advice guys. I certainly don't want to implicate the seller in any wrongdoings.

Setting aside that I don't 'like' the passport - In the usual circumstances you would just send the passport back to the issuing authority/organisation and get a 'show name' added in brackets - I did this with a previous horse. This then satisfies BD to register the horse in that name. I can't do this as the issuing authority no longer exists.

I might give the Horse Passport Agency a call to see what they suggest...

My friend binned hers and got another one. It happens all the time. No one enforces passports, so no one at all will be implicated in anything. Chuck it out and as NIHB to send a new one
