I recently purchased a young 2yr old cob. He came with half filled out papers, got a micro chip sticker and stamped by vet but these papers are from 2019, previous owner isn't sure if he had a passport or not. I emailed and also rang the passport agency with no luck. How do I go about getting him a passport or check if he has one already that's just lost?

He’ll need new paperwork now, as his is over 6 months old (and incomplete by the sounds of it) - book him in with the vet, they will need to check him for the microchip and issue some new paperwork for him - sounds like someone started it but never sent it off. Hope that helps!

Thank you :) so the vet issues the paperwork for passports? Thought I had to download it from the passport agency site. I will give the vet a ring in the morning.

It depends - if you’re happy with a bog standard Pet-ID or Horse Passport Agency passport then the vets should have those forms. If it’s a specific breed society passport you’re after then you’d need to bring the paperwork yourself.

I called the vet and they said i will have to wait for the agency agency to get back to me and just said its illegal to buy horses that don't have a passport. Does anyone know what agencies would accept him for a passport? I don't have pedigree papers for him, I just know his Sire and Dam are gypsy cobs. I would like to make sure his vaccinations are up to date (was told they are) but want to make sure and he will probably need a booster anyways. I don't mind what passport he has as long as he has one. Any suggestion on what I should do?

Check the microchip number from the sticker on this website: https://www.equineregister.co.uk/home - this will tell you if he ever had a UK passport, if he has then you will need a duplicate from the same agency.

If he has had a chip implanted but no passport was ever issued (from the sounds of things with his half filled in papers I imagine this might be the case) then you can take your pick of passport agencys that don't require parentage etc. BHS, pet-ID and horse passport agency would all be ones to look at.

(Plenty of people buy horses without passports - and also plenty of horses with microchips that have never been registered!)

It's illegal to sell them without a passport but I don't think it's illegal to buy one. You won't get in trouble if you get one quickly.

I think Wetherbys offer a Fast track identity passport.

Lovely horse by the way.

Vaccinations are recorded on the physical passport presented to the vet at the time, they do not get logged with any agency so even if he has had one a passport agency won't know anyway. Due to GDPR i doubt a vet would give his history unless told to by the old owner.

I have only ever sent passport papers to the society i wish them to be passported with, so if that wasn't done he is unpassported.

If you have his half filled in papers, you can call the agency you want to passport with and tell them what you have and send it in with your details. As said, its illegal to sell without a passport but it isn't illegal to buy one...and frankly there is noone who chases that sort of thing up anyway so don't worry about that. As you have no pedigree i would just passport with anyone who takes "unknown" horses.

Your vet will recommend you start a brand new vaccination record, regardless of if you think they have had one before.

Your microchip number will be on the microchip sticker. Try it without gaps.

But if it’s not found then it probably hasn’t been registered. I’d just apply for a Pet ID passport.

On my Horse Passport Agency passports the ULN and microchip numbers are different, but in my Irish Horse Register Passport, they are the same bar one digit
