Sorry for about my millionth post this week...

The horse i've been wanting for years is finally coming to me in 2 weeks time. I've known him since he was broken in about9 years ago (as a 4 year old).

BUT they've just found his passport and it says he is 25!!! I'm certain he is not, I've worked at the riding school almost 20 years so he is definitely not that old, but how can I get it changed? Is it possible? How was this mistake even made?? HELP!

Also, would I need to get a vet out to do it?

Thanks

x

The same thing happened to me. The form was filled out wrong and his year of birth was put at 1979 instead of 1997. The passport issuer said they would delete the year of birth from the passport but wouldn't change it. In the end I didn't bother, he was the same horse despite what his passport erroneously said!

Your vetting will give you an approximate age, prob worth more than the info on the passport. I would just double check that the description page does actually refer to your horse.

I know how old he is, so im not worried about that... I'm not getting him vetted as I've known him and the place im getting him from since forever, they're friends of the family and he isnt expensive so vetting seems just money I dont have to spend at the moment... Do you think it will affect insurance?

Depending how much you want to insure him for, most insurers will ask for a vetting. I'm not saying you need a vetting to tell you what age he actually is but to have to show insurance if they require. An insurer will ask what age the horse is something to back up what age it actually is would help. Having been in the same situation a few years ago, had known horse since it was born, and not had a vetting I very much lived to regret it.

Hi,
When I first bought my mare I only wanted basic insurance i.e covering vets bills and peronsal liabilty etc and they asked for my vetting certificate, they didn't ask to see the passport at all. I would suggest having a vetting done or atleast a vet examination. Or check with your insurer and see what info they would need and then go with that.
Also if you ring your passport issuing office they may be able to change the date of birth as long as you have a vet cert with the supposed age on.
:)

This is all great, thank you all!

NFU dont need a certificate I dont think but PetPlan do (and PetPlan are £12 a month cheaper!) so would be wise in the long run to get it with them I think. Anybody been with either of these before? How mcuh is vetting?? I feel very clueless with this kind of stuff... Always ridden someone elses horses!! x

You may only need a vetting if insuring for more than a set amount. But without a vetting certificate or anything else to prove age there is a risk that a discrepancy between a passport age and the declared age to the insurer would give them a reason to refuse to pay out should you claim.

It might be worth contacting the PIO and see if they can resolve it. If it is as simple as the DoB being entered incorrectly on the passport but correct on the origionating application form then they may well agree to ammend it. Is he micro chipped? Does that record have the correct age attached?

If it were me I would be worried that the discrepancy without any supporting evidence either way would invalidate any claim for vets fees.
