I've finally found a lovely person to loan my horse. She will be collecting him in a couple of weeks. My question is, do I keep his passport? I always thought that I did but I know that you shouldn't transport horses without having their passport with them and also his yearly injections are listed on his passport.

I have drawn up a loan agreement and do trust the person who is taking him but am just unsure about this.

Thanks

i have the passport with my loan horse because whilst i have him he will be haveing his jabs and will need to be written on passport unless you are close by then you can take it down there for vet to sign !!

There have recently been a number of scams that have resulted in loan horses dissapearing. (They ended up being sold on or slaughtered).

Always ensure that you check the home address of the person loaning the horse and ask to see a copy of their utility bills, passport and driving licence. Anyone genuine will not mind
The passport should go to the person loaning the horse.

Make sure that in the loan agreement that you can visit the horse whenever you want and without advance warning.

The best loan agreaments are those which where developed by the BHS or NFU?

Thanks for the replies. I have drawn up a loan agreement which states that I can visit my horse at any time and also I will be going with him when he is moved so I can a see the place and make sure that he settles in.

The borrower has given me her address and the address and contact details of the livery yard where my horse will be kept.

I've also heard some horror stories, that's why I wasn't sure what to do with the passport. I think that I've done everything I can to ensure that things will be OK. The girl who's loaning his is lovely and does seem very genuine. I suppose there are also lots of cases of horses being loaned out with no problems at all. Hopefully my horse will be one of them.

Thanks

Unfortunately, the Passport MUST stay with the person loaning the horse, unless the horse stays with you.
