One of my recently acquired ponies started life with travellers and is registered with the Gypsy Cob Society (he's not a gypsy cob, he's part bred Trotter!). The passport was only issued in July this year and he wasn't microchipped as he should have been. Basically, it looks a bit dodgy - the passport's full of spelling mistakes, the identification pic isn't filled in and there's a couple of photos of him looking terrible in the front! It says things such as "half bred trotter section D" in it, which really is rather cringeworthy!

I checked this society out and they do exist. However, I'd like to know if there's anyway I can re-register him with another organisation (with GCS' say-so obviously), e.g. the BHS/BEF, something that sounds (and looks) a little more credible, or does that now have to be his passport for life?

You could tell them you have lost it and re passport him
I can understand where you are coming from on this one !
My 15.2 tb x is registered with the minature horse society and tbh it looks like it's been printed off someones home computer. When he has finished growing I will be looking to replace it.I have to update the old one anyway.

I know someone who has a red and white mare and her passport is from them, it says she is black and white so she rang them and they told her to just cross it out and write over the top. Now correct me if i,m wrong but would,nt that be illegal ?? . Their passports are issued on photo,s only no registered person as to fill the details in so very dodgy in deed.

the passport regs are so rubbish that Im sure you'd be fine to get a new one for him, the only issue with saying that you've lost the original is that the passport issuing organisation you go to should stamp "replacement" on the new one. From my work point of view as a trading standards animal health officer would be that if you feel the current passport looks dodgy then get it changed. If you were in Shropshire I would certainly try and contact a passpsort issuer on your behalf if you were to call us to complain about it. You could try your local Trading Standards, not sure what they're like in yorkshire im afraid!!

Yes, I have some doubts about his age too, he's supposed to be 5 but he looks much younger. Saying that, he's never been worked so he could just be immature. Anyway, I digress...

I might ask my vet about it, they might have an idea?

Thanks dessmont

Surely if I said I'd lost it I'd be expected to let the GCS know, and they'd have to be the ones to reissue?

I believed that when passports were issues after July the horse had to be microchipped... and he's not... an excuse for me to say it's invalid perhaps?

If he's traveelers pony then he's at lest a year younger and most of their stock have trotter in their breeding. I own a 4 year old filly breed by travellers the dam a skewbald mare by a bay stallion, i've owned from the day she was born. They are onlt now begining to realise they need to have their horses passported if they want to sell on to other people as they if coloured fetch a lot of money and some of these animals are very well bred.

My mare is passported with the Gypsy Cob Society and her passport is also very dodgy. It doesn't really have any information on it other than the supposed year of her birth and her supposed height, both of which I believe to be incorrect. It has tippex on it aswell as spelling errors, her colour is also incorrectly down as smokey grey (does the horse in my signature look smokey grey to you?

My YO recently bought a cob of a dealer who shipped him in from Ireland un-passported and the dealer got a passport off the GCS and I believe a few dealers probably do this as it is one of the easiest societies to get a passport off, they're cheep and they don't seem to get checked. So basically a dealer can ship a horse over that is say 8 and passport it as being 6 or whatever they think will sell best, i.e dodgy.

I showed my vet the passport and how dodgy it was and all the errors and she said unless I planned on selling her she wouldn't bother trying to do anything about it.
