Is a horses passport proof of ownership ? i have been told i can be fined up to £5000 because i have not sent it away yet to have my details added. The last owners details are not on it either, also does it differ between Scotland and the rest of the country.

I'm not sure but I waited about six months before I sent the little ponies passport off, as I had to wait until his second lot of jabs had been done in case there was a delay in sending it back. With the new horse, I sent it off after a month again due to jabs being done and the person I bought the horse from isn't even listed in the passport, so now I'm just hoping it comes back alright :(

Damned if you do & damned if you dont......

Potential fine for not changing passport into your name, max £5k
Potential fine for transporting horse & not being able to produce passport, max £5k
Definate fine for not having a passport full stop.....£5k max

From Defra: Every equine by law must have a valid Defra approved passport. If you own a horse or are its main keeper, you are responsible for making sure you have an up to date horse passport so your horse can be identified. You could be fined up to £5000 if you don’t have one. Only the owner of a horse can apply for a passport.

So - only an owner can apply for a passport, but they contradict themselves in saying to start with 'owner or main keeper'..... the rules are an ass!

I have a German passport for my pony and a certificate of ownership. I have been told that the German issuing authority won't be interested if I send the passport back but that I should send a letter and a copy of the certificate asking to be registered as the new owner. They will then send me back an updated certificate with all my details on.

It makes a mockery of the issuing of passports if the issuing authority isn't bothered whether they are updated.

Non of my horses have me in their passports and most of them not even the person before!
Pointless system and pointless waste of money sending them off

I've never heard of anyone having to produce them at anything other an affiliated competition and then they check the vacs page not the owner.

Every horse I've bought has not had the any owners on it since the breeder! I sent my gelding's off to Ireland last week and just received it back, I've had him almost 2 years... I just never got round to doing it. No excuse really. It does highlight how crap the passport system is though, It does irritate me how much it can cost though , only cost me £7 to put myself and the previous owner on his SJAI passport! Rang up the irish Connemara pony society and it would cost £40 plus postage, and I needed to contact and send letters to all of his previous homes to confirm change of ownership and send the letters back to me, so I can them send them to each other and then the Connemara society again... yeah . The lady at SJAI is absolutely lovely and made it so easy! :D

You don't have to send a German passport back to Germany. The British Equestrian Federation will do them in this country £20 inc special delivery.
