Are you meant to do anything in particular with your horses passport after they die?

Are they supposed to be returned to the issuer or would you burn them?

Having a clear out and came across my old pony's passport, and it got me thinking.

^^^ yeah...wouldn't some kind of vet certified letter suffice for the PIO to amend their records? (But I guess if you had to pay vet/knackerman to provide you with a letter, might be cheaper to post passport off with sae....)

Ours provided us with a receipt at the time.

I sent mine back to the PIO. I made no request for it to be returned (as just being a identity passport it didn't have his pedigree, etc, on it, I still have his IHB papers with all that info on) and I was sent an aknowledgement.

They did not ask for proof. I did have an invoice from the kennels but it did not give details of the horse so it could have been for anyone.

You would think that the person that does the deed of pts would have the authority to stamp or sign the passport to say it is no longer in use then the owner could send a letter to notify pio for their records.

I called the PIO and told them she'd been pts, they said 'thank you' and made a note. Never sent the passport back and still have it in a drawer somewhere 4 1/2 years on. I did write 'PTS on 13/7/08' on the front of it though.

I neutured my tbs to westherbys.
They stamped it deceased then returned it to me.
My warmbloods I haven't returned
yet to petid, he died in June.
My insurance did tell me I would have to send it to them before a pay out was made.
I had to fight with them for 6 months to pay out for other reasons.
I never sent the passport to them and they have never mentioned it again.

Yes you are supposed to send the paper work back to agency.

I cannot bring myself to do this even though been told too when I told them I still had pony's So in my folder it stays. To me its another thing to give up that belonged to your beloved horse.

Same with farmkey, what they should do is say " send it back and we will stamp deceased on it and return it like a bank book , Then I would send it." But Farmkey did not

Farmkey wont return the forms either. I had the insite to photo copy Biscuits first , but both Bonnie and Diamonds I have the originals and I will not be returning them they were part of their security and nostalgia . To send them in I feel its another part of them I will loose, so they will not go anywhere, also I get to keep the P freezemark without paying a retention on it

You are supposed to send them back so they can be stamped.

I'm not sending my one back to Weatherbys though, I'm worried it might get lost in the post and I want to keep it.

The vet never asked me for my passport and since it would then be just my word that she is dead (and anyone could say that) I didn't bother to return it. Half the issueing agencies have gone to the wall anyway so I have no doubt the record system is in total chaos.

My insurance company asked to see passport before they would pay out, they then sent me a letter acknowledging its receipt that said they had returned it to the issuing office. Never thought to ask for it back, but like others have said I found it hard to part with, but not sure returning it with deceased stamped on it would have been good for my mental state.
Think I will just hang onto my old boys when he goes as he's not insured.

I emailed the Irish Draught Society (GB) and told them. I kept the passport and when I checked their site his records had been amended as deceased with the date.

You're meant to send them back and then they return them stamped.

I haven't sent any off though and won't unless chased.
