a friend of mine may have her horse being PTS. however his passport is the old sort and shes worried that she will be fined because of this. obviously she doesnt want to fork out the 40 to get a new one however she wanted to know if its still ok to do this with an older passport?

I had my horse PTS last year & was never asked to produce his passport. Think it may only be required if the carcass is going to meat trade...? I certainly didn't have to produce any documentation - but then, the vet has known me for most of my life...

My boy was PTS last year and I never had to show his passport. I just had to send it back to the place that issued it

when our old po. was put to sleep they never asked to see to passport, and when we rung the society up who issued the passport they said we could either send it back or keep it, so we still have it.

i haven't even looked at my horses passport since she was put down so i don't know what im suposed to do with it. i think i better dig it out

When any horse dies or is pts the passport is meant to go back to the issuing authority and also is meant to be signed by the person who is putting the equine to sleep.
Horrid subject though

When I had my old TB shot I was never asked to produce a passport, by either the horse disposal guy or the vet.

I can understand your friend worry but to be honest if the horse is being disposed of correctly then I very much doubt they will bother her, people have better things to do than pester and report poor upset woman who'd having her horse PTS if its not entering any food chain or at least they should be.

I still have my old boys passport, the vet didnt ask to see it or anything and i will just keep it.

If passports are not sent back this is how there are 40yo horses on NED--Ok I know some will still be around but they are the exception.

I would quite like to keep it after shes gone, do you think they could stamp it saying that horse has been pts and then send it back to you?

Yes.

Legally you have to send the passport back to the issuing authority within 30 days of the animal's death. That's the law though what the repercussions of not doing it are I don't know. Apart from keeping track of horses / ponies this is to stop passports being recycled and used for nefarious means.

The PIO should send it back to you once the death has been recorded and the passport marked if you ask, but are not obliged to do so; most will however.

I still have Mazzie's and she went last year... I did however call the HPA to report that she had been put to sleep, with her name and passport number.

Death of a horse

13. The owner must return the passport to the Passport Issuing Organisation within 30 days of the death of a horse indicating the date of death so that the Organisation's records can be updated and the passport cancelled unless the horse was sold to a slaughterhouse. The Passport Issuing Organisation may agree to return the passport after cancellation (if this is desired by the owner) subject to agreement to any terms and conditions it may impose. On or after 16 August 2005, owners sending horses to slaughterhouses must surrender their passports to the slaughterhouse occupier who will make copies of Sections II and IX of the passport before returning it, within 30 days of the horse's death, to the Passport Issuing Organisation that issued it (see also paragraph 14 below).

Slaughter for human consumption

14. On or after 16 August 2005, a horse cannot be consigned for slaughter for human consumption unless it is accompanied by a valid passport and the declaration at Section IX shows that the animal is intended for slaughter for human consumption ( see Section C). Any entries on the passport regarding medicines administered will be checked at the slaughterhouse to ensure that any relevant withdrawal period has elapsed. The slaughterhouse occupier will return the passport to the issuing Organisation with a notification of the horse's death so that the passport can be cancelled and records brought up to date.

) In the case of pure-breds, I notify the breed society - it's no-one else's business IMHO!

As the local authority has NEVER asked to see any of my horses' passports - nor has anyone else except the breed society at stallion grading - or the vet to update vaccinations .....

A passport is and always remains the property of the PIO, therfore it should be returned on an animals death. Although 'you' have paid for it, it is NOT yours. You can request it's return once records have been amened, and most PIO's will happily return it.

i had my girl pts a year ok never asked to see my passport but i think you ment to send it back to the passport people you got it from. I didnt it was my girls i paid for it so i kept it!
