sorry if this has been covered before, but if you loan your horse out you have to give the loanee the passport, so whats stopping them selling your horse ? Mind you, I suppose anyone could apply for a passport for a horse thats not theirs anyway?

Goes with them - need it for vaccs, travelling, veterinary care, etc.

Psssports are no document for official ownership really, anyone can get one really etc. I guessyou could ring up the agency and just verify that at no point is that horse being sold, if they get it sent through for a change of ownership perhaps....but they'd have an awful lot of horses on record for that if they did!

edited - I wrote in mine at the back, saying owned by *my name*, not to be sold, and my name and address and number/email. Not 'correct' probably, but shall never be selling that mare anyway as she was my first pony and have completely trustworthy people loaning her anyway so I'm perfectly happy with the situation. :)

The passports should be with the horse, so whoever is caring for the horse at the time. This means that they can have the passport for vets, traveling to shows etc.

I would have thought that you being the named owner in the passport would stop them from being able to sell on the horse, and hopefully having a trustworthy loaner! :)

Yes...but you only have to put a signature on them mostly in the 'transfer of ownership' page and send it off :) My mare had 2 unofficial owners other than the last previous owner who is officially recorded in her passport, neither other two of the people are on there as they never bothered to send it off to have it changed....so isn't an accurate measure for ownership really. I never sent one of my ponies passports off tbh, I completely forgot to. Sold him and they changed it no problem.

I have the passport of my loan pony from the charity i got her from, you can actually get away with not having transfer of owners sig i did this with one of mine as no one had updated hers since 5 owners ago but i had to fill in info get letter and evidence that the horse was same as in passport. The only way to be safe is to keep going and checking the horse you loan out every so often.

Please link yourself with your horse on Nedonline, photocopy the passport, Take passport type pics of your horse--both sides and front view to show face markings, take pictures of loanee with your horse, ask them to show you household bills eg electric.

Agree with Cuffy.

But the Passport - not a copy - must go with the horse. Don't you trust the loanee though??

Not loaned yet, only thinking about it for my pony! But the stolen horses forum often has horses go missing out on loan, so bit wary

my loaner would not give me the passport she said she would give me a copy of the vacination form, apparenly the passport had to be held by the owner, i dno was the first time i had ever slightly owneded a horse or anything so i had no idea however everyone i spoke to said it was odd, but i could not do anything as i did not know if i was ment to have the passport or anything

The passport should stay with the pony. We have two out on loan the new families have the passports. This is where freeze marking comes into its own, they are unlikely to sell a marked horse.

I have sent a couple of horses out on loan in the past and never sent the passports. Gave the loaner a copy and sent it to the actual vets for signing when vaccs needed. Vets were more than happy to ssee a copy then be sent the origional! Prob not correct but had passports go missing in the past!

I got the passport for my horse 6 months after I got him on loan. I don't blame his owner for not giving me the passport earlier, I could have been anyone!

If I loaned my horse to someone I just met NO WAY would I give them the passport straight away, they could take it to the sales the week after! What would the police say? 'err you gave the horse to this person...' it's like leaving your keys in the car and blaming someone for stealing it! I would however give the passport to the loaner after 3-6 months once I knew everything was ok. Also what if they handed the horse back after a few weeks from getting it, saying it didn't suit them but oops they've lost the passport, what a pain.
I really wouldn't trust the original passport with some stranger looking after my horse, if they needed a copy for their livery or something I wold photocopy the p'port. I compete for my RC and all they needed was a copy of the passport :)

Just seen post on Stolen horses, where freezemarked horse gone missing on loan !

I have a little loan pony companion. I've had her 2 1/2 years, but owner wanted to hold passport.....christ knows why,I haven't seen or heard from her since she dropped pony off!!

I was told the passport had to go with the horse because if you ever want to go to a show, move yards etc etc you HAVE to have the passport with the horse, by law.... A copy is not enough (could easily be doctored).

I was also told the the authorities that be (DEFRA?) can turn up at any yard at any time and demand to see all the horses passports within quite a short time frame.

Not that I have ever experienced any passport checking, but I have read the passport laws leaflet that came around and the passport should defintiyl be with the horse.

I've got my loan horses passport. I email her owner regularly to let her know how we are getting on. I am more than happy for her to visit anytime she likes. She is not local but knows where the yard is and what field she is in if she wants to pop down.
Ive also signed a loan agreement which i think is really important then you both know where you stand and also its an official document with a signature in case of any problems.

Regardless of the reasons anyone would not want to let the passport go with the horse/pony, the LAW states that it must stay with the PONY/HORSE - so it must go. Sorry
