Hands up those who have been out in trailer or box anywhere to competition, moving, hacking, training - anywhere off your yard - who actually remembers to take your horses/ponies passport too?

This follows an odd discussion I had when out today.

I always have mine in the horsebox, I have a little plastic folder for each pony with all documents in (insurance, freeemark doc, passport, teeth charts, vets bills and saddle security marking forms)

But recently I paid a lady to transport my pony and didn't give her the folder. I was in the car behind the horsebox but still worried lol!
 
Mine rarely get taken with me, I have only ever had them checked at BE events when we always take them but otherwise they are safely at home and could be produced within the time allowed if required, I would take them if going on a long journey or to the vets.
One of my liveries moved yesterday and had a minor panic when she had "lost" her horses passport when packing up her house, luckily she had left it with me so it was handed over ready for the journey.
 
Mine is in a folder with horsebox keys and breakdown service numbers/insurance details, so if I want the keys I have to grab it.

Mind you, when I hop on someone else's trailer I normally forget it, so I selected "most of the time" ... It is in reality "almost always"
 
they are in the tow car glovebox so always have them Cant say we always have the ones that cadge a lift somewhere though
 
Well given the fact I don't want a £2000 fine, or risk not being able to transport my horse with someone else in the event of a breakdown, always.
 
Always when traveling. And we've actually checked too! There is a handy weighbridge on the main route out of a large show venue so VOSA sometimes have a happy sunday afternoon checking weights and passports. But they won't look in the box to verify the ID of the horses on board. Its too dangerous apparently....
 
Have had checked only the once at the roadside, and that was only because VOSA were having a routine stop/check for weights, passports and dipping the tanks for diesel about 4 years ago.
Otherwise, not any other time

Like others, I take mine all the time - in case of breakdown (as any hire driver should never take them without the passports), but also because its the law (and can't afford a blemish on my licence/life!)
 
Our passport are kept in a safe on the horse box at the yard so they are with us when we travel the horses. They are also available if needed on the yard. They are not taken with the horse when hacking as it's not necessary. The passport must be made available within three hours of it being requested by an enforcement agency so if it's requested when out hacking it can be produced from the yard within the allowed 3 hours.
 
Theoretically, all the time. However, I do just occasionally forget. I have just realised that recently when my youngster was professionally transported to her training yard, I wasn't asked to show her passport and I left it at home :eek3:! (I travelled in my own vehicle in convoy with the lorry).

As previous poster said - recovery won't transport your horse without it so I have a bag which I use whenever I go anywhere and keep passport in there. That way it doesn't get left in horsebox all the time but is always there when I travel. I broke down on M62 last week and it was one of the first things they asked me over the phone.
 
Always. Our stable jockey was stopped by French Police when transporting his TB and all his documents checked. We took two youngsters to an in-hand show and they were checked including their m/chips before being allowed off the trailer.

Our Shagya stallion completed 3 x90km endurance in France, two events one after the other, his passport was on the list for checking and his full sister at the second event. He now SJ's and last weekend there was a printed list of passports for checking, I mean a thorough check. They are handed in at the beginning of the competition and retrieved at the end of the day.
 
Now I always carry it. I broke down some years ago, waited a long time for recovery and the lorry needed to go to the garage. The first thing the transporter did was ask for the passport, which was at home. He refused to transport the horse, I started to cry and thankfully he relented but I got a big ticking off as he was breaking the law. Then the bl...y horse wouldn't load into his nice new 3.5 lorry fortunately a brush up his bottom did the trick but I make sure I have it now.
 
I always do now after a stressful journey last summer when I broke down while towing on the motorway.
Called my horse recovery who wouldn't transport my horses cause didn't have passports to hand... its not worth the risk.
 
I keep mine in a plastic box with my first aid kit, pressure halter for loading issues, etc, and the box is always loaded when we travel.
 
Seeing as it's illegal to travel horses without them, you would have be a bit stupid not to take their passports. Obviously people can forget but then forgetting or not knowing isn't a valid defence.
 
Keep mine in the lorry as otherwise I'd forget it. Glad to see you've got a poll working now TFF, and am v glad you posted it as it reminds me the vet is coming to do jabs tomorrow so I need to get it out and also get G booked in.
 
Every time we go off the yard (by a vehicle- not hacking from the yard!). Too risky for us to leave in tow car/lorry but it's part of the packing routine
 
I'm always absolutely amazed by those that do not take the passport with them when travelling anywhere.

I hope you never break down, because a transporter quite rightly won't pick you up with out it, which makes a stressful situation a hell of a lot worse.

I've also had mine checked at a fair few shows
 
We have a zip-up material folder thing with all the waggon details in (including the VOSA download about private horse transport :) ) the passports go in that and it all goes with us.
