This really confuses me so though i'd ask for some advise here as I am sure someone understands it all!!

Here goes, my mare is a pure bred Selle Francais but her passport is an Oldenburg one!! Apparently the story goes that she was bred in France but the breeder went bust and the whole heard were bought as weanlings by someone in Germany where her passport was obtained hence the Oldenburg passprt.

Now comes the odd questions.

I take it that the oldenburg stud book is not a closed one therefore why she has an oldenburg passport?!!??
How do I register her as Selle Francais? and is this important?
Is the Selle Francais stud bookk closed?
Am I right in thinking that a closed stud book means that all horses are actually this breed and if not closed then as long as they are in this country when registsred than thats what breed they are??
Does a passport signify which stud book they are in or are they two different things?
My horses passport is also overstamped SHB (GB) so she is a german Selle Francais in England!!!!!?????

Ok so now I am confusing myself

someone please explain.

None of the warmblood studbooks are truely closed, the Trakehner being the most closed as they only allow certain TB and arab blood to be added.
I assume your foal had both parents approved Oldenburg despite having Selle Francais bloodlines hence being eligible for Oldenburg papers. No reason why you cant have her overstamped SF if you want to, I think the British daughter society is Equi Cours and they will be able to advise you.

What exactly is your mare's pedigree?

The critical thing you need to remember are that warmblood studbooks can not be thought of in the same way as 'breed' studbooks. The warmblood registries are performane orientated not 'breed characteristic' orientated and in pursuit of the perfect sport horse, they allow all sorts of outside blood in them so you can't really classify them according to their blood - its simpler (and more accurate) to classify them according to their registry.

Yep, you're right, the Oldenburg studbook is not closed - it allows in some outside blood if it complies with its rules. And there's not really any such thing as a 'pure-bred' SF - they like all the other WB registries are a mix of TB and other blood.

You can only 'register' a horse once in its life when it is issued with its papers, however as Volatis says you can have it overstamped. To be honest, I'm not sure what advantage there would be overstamping it SF. I presume she is overstamped by SHB so she can be shown.

Almost! A closed book does mean all horses are that breed. If it is not closed (like most of the warmblood registries) it allows in some outside blood but those horses must satisfy rules before inclusion. There is no restriction to national boundaries any more, a lot of the big warmblood registries are international these days.

It usually does but not always - people with imported horses who didn't have passports didn't necessarily know how to get passports from their horse's studbook so they got passports issued from a UK passport issuing organisation. The horse should still have papers from its studbook though.

No she is an Oldenburg that's here in England but born in France with a lot of SF blood. Now that's international for you!

You need to take a long hard look at the breeding of your mare. Go back to Geisha N, the mother of Ephebe for Ever and she is also the sister of Jalisco B, one of the greatest sires of all time. Nice mare, chose your stallions well. You've got something from the top French motherline.

hello,

i have the same (my mare is from isky de baussy as well), born in belgium as SF, then she came to germany as a foal and was entered in to the Oldenburg book - i guess the germans take their breeding as the ultimate instance, so being SF doesn't count as much as being Oldnburg...
congrats to your horse! my mare is 2 years older than yours and is just getting into her first jumping season. she's very good.

Sorry, took me a while to find this website and thread again...
My mare's name is Sainte Amour and her dad is Isky de Baussy and her mom' s called Eclipse du Claire from Joad X. She was bred 2002 by Eric Navet in Belgium (don't remember the name of the "Haras" by heart, but i could look it up in her papers..), then as a foal she was bought by Paul Schockmöhle and grew up on his fields. In fall 2006 they started riding her and soon thereafter she was bought by Hofgut Albführen (Germany, next to Swiss border) where I bought her in march 2007 and where we still are. She's the joy of my life

Phenomenal jumper. a bit on the nervous side, but just the past month she finally started maturing a bit and we are all really curious how she will behave in her first jumping season..
Where are you located? What colour is your mare? Mine is dark brown-to-black. tall. skinny.
hope you still get this..
