Passports.....Update on when do you have to carry them.....

Some of you may remember I got pulled over a couple of months ago with the truck and asked for passport, which luckily I had, but some people on here mentioned that you shouldnt have to have it uless competing/selling or moving to a new yard....

Well, spoke to my vet this morning whilst doing Vaccs, and she said they have all been advised the passport MUST be with the horse whenever it gets on the truck, regardless of why it is travelling/where it is going....they have also been advised the government are going to do more and more spot checks on this....so be prepared!

a nuisance but a good idea if it reduces horse theft. Do you know what they are doing to people who don't have them?

tbh I'd say before they start to crack down on people travelling without passports they need to be more severe on people selling horses without passports or seemingly being able to get new passports without proof of what happened to the old one

I thought this was the case already?

I keep my 2 competing horses passports permanently in our jeep (which pulls the trailer) anyway, mainly due to spot checks at BE etc.

They are fining people I gather... however, as we said this morning, this means even if your horse goes on holiday livery, their passport in theory has to go to....what if they get into the hands of someone less trustworthy, they then have horse and passport....?!!

So did I MM, but some people said not.

I suspect although they can pull you over and ask for passports, they can't fine you unless they can prove you were travelling for competition, breeding, etc.

this is just typical of government deparments such as defra, sounds like the left hand has no idea what the right is doing leading to mass confusion. would love to see the government officials prove where you were travelling to! The whole thing is far to vague to be properly enforceable IMO

I've got to send my new horses passport back to Belgium to register as his new owner so what am I supposed to do when travelling him whilst this is being done?

BID I think you can now get Belgium passports changed and overstamped here in the UK by any of the passport issuing bodies. would be interesting to see what line was taken in such a situation though.

I suppose if you were stopped 100 miles from home you would have to prove you were just going for a hack!
